The Department of Health has issued guidelines for preventing Norovirus outbreaks following a recent incident during a school sports week in Klaeng District, Rayong Province. The outbreak affected 1,436 people, including students, teachers, and staff. The department emphasizes the importance of assessing the quality of drinking and utility water and encourages regular handwashing with soap and clean water before and after daily activities.

On December 16, Dr. Thiti Saengtham, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health, addressed the recent outbreak of acute diarrhea caused by Norovirus at two schools in Klaeng District, Rayong Province. The outbreak affected 1,436 individuals, including 1,418 students and 18 teachers and staff. The virus was linked to contaminated water and ice consumed during the school sports week. Norovirus is particularly prone to spreading among children with weaker immune systems, especially during the winter season. It is commonly found in schools, restaurants, hospitals, childcare facilities, and even on cruise ships.

Transmission and Symptoms of Norovirus: Norovirus is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily through food, water, air, or direct contact. Transmission methods include:

- Direct contact with an infected person.

- Contact with objects contaminated with the virus.

- Inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices.

Norovirus has a short incubation period of 12-48 hours after exposure. Common symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, low-grade fever, fatigue, headaches, and muscle aches. Symptoms can be more severe in young children and the elderly, potentially leading to dehydration. Patients are advised to drink oral rehydration solutions to replace lost fluids and electrolytes.

Preventive Measures for Individuals:

- Consume freshly cooked food and use shared utensils like serving spoons.

- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.

- Wash hands with soap and clean water before and after daily activities.

- Avoid drinking unclean water or coming into contact with contaminated water.

Preventive Measures for Organizations and Facilities:

- Add chlorine to water storage tanks for drinking and utility water.

- Regularly assess the quality of drinking and utility water.

- Provide adequate handwashing stations with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

- Educate the public about good hygiene practices and personal health care to prevent disease.

These measures aim to curb the spread of Norovirus and ensure better public health outcomes.
