Is the water you're using truly clean? Could it be contaminated? Beware of parasites in water that can cause red, inflamed eyes, and in severe cases, lead to blindness or meningitis!

Recent news has reported the presence of parasites in tap water, often originating from various organisms such as insects, fish, birds, mammals, and more. These parasites pose significant health risks as we use tap water daily for washing our faces, brushing our teeth, and other cleaning activities.

The identified parasite is Acanthamoeba, which is commonly found in the environment such as in water, soil, and dust. While infections are rare, anyone can become infected. Symptoms include:

  • Eye irritation and pain
  • Sensitivity to light and tearing
  • Redness and corneal inflammation
  • Decreased vision
  • Risk of blindness
  • Meningitis

Acanthamoeba can enter the body through various routes, including through the eyes (especially for contact lens users), skin wounds, or by inhaling the parasite. To prevent corneal infections, it is recommended to:

  • Avoid using contaminated or unclean tap water for consumption or daily use
  • Wash hands thoroughly, especially before touching the eyes
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes to prevent spreading the infection
  • Use boiled or clean water to rinse the eyes
  • Avoid swimming pools that are not properly maintained
  • Use only clean water to rinse contact lenses
  • Avoid close contact or sharing items with people who have eye infections

If you experience any unusual symptoms, it is advised to consult an ophthalmologist for accurate diagnosis and treatment in case of an infection.

With concern from Sikarin Hospital Bangkok, we urge everyone to be cautious and take care of your eye health to stay safe from dangerous eye diseases.
