Metta Pracharak Hospital Provides Guidelines for Safe Contact Lens Use

Bangkok, Thailand — Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services Thailand, has issued important guidelines for the safe use of contact lenses, particularly those used for cosmetic purposes. This announcement comes in response to the growing popularity of decorative contact lenses among students, teenagers, working individuals, and adults. The ease of availability and low cost of these lenses have contributed to their widespread use.

Dr. Surattanawanich emphasized that the practice of sharing contact lenses or purchasing second-hand lenses online is hazardous and should be avoided. Such behaviors significantly increase the risk of eye infections and other complications.

Risks of Improper Contact Lens Use

Dr. Arkom Chaiwerawattana, Director of Metta Pracharak Hospital (Rai Khing), highlighted that contact lenses are personal items and should not be shared with others. Sharing contact lenses can lead to corneal abrasions, corneal and conjunctival inflammation, and infections transmitted through tears. He strongly advises individuals to consult with an ophthalmologist to obtain properly fitting contact lenses and receive guidance on their correct usage and maintenance.

Dr. Vatookarn Roongpoovapatr, a specialist at the hospital, added that annual eye exams are essential for contact lens users to ensure proper fitting and eye health. The examination includes checking the curvature of the cornea to select suitable lenses. Users should follow the specific care instructions for their type of contact lenses, such as:

- Monthly Contact Lenses: Must be removed and soaked in a disinfectant solution for cleaning after every use.

- Daily Contact Lenses: Intended for single use only and should not be reused.

Warning Signs and Immediate Actions

Dr. Roongpoovapatr advised contact lens users to be vigilant about any abnormal symptoms, including pain, irritation, red eyes, blurred vision, eye discharge, excessive tearing, or light sensitivity. If any of these symptoms occur, users should stop wearing the lenses immediately and consult an ophthalmologist.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of not wearing contact lenses for more than eight hours, avoiding sleeping in them, and not wearing them while swimming. Users should regularly apply artificial tears to prevent dry eyes, a common issue among contact lens wearers.

Key Recommendations for Safe Contact Lens Use

- Consult an Ophthalmologist: Seek professional advice before using contact lenses and undergo annual eye exams.

- Personal Use Only: Never share contact lenses with others to avoid the risk of infections.

- Follow Care Instructions: Properly clean and store contact lenses according to their type and manufacturer's guidelines.

- Monitor for Symptoms: Be alert to any signs of eye discomfort or infection and seek medical advice promptly.

- Limit Wear Time: Do not exceed recommended wear times and avoid wearing lenses during activities that increase the risk of contamination.

These guidelines aim to ensure that individuals who use contact lenses can do so safely, minimizing the risk of complications and maintaining good eye health.
