New York — A study published in the scientific journal Nature, one of the largest efforts to assess the global health impact of Western dietary habits, revealed that consuming sugary drinks is responsible for approximately 340,000 deaths annually due to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases worldwide.

The study further found that sugary drinks were linked to an additional 2.2 million cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease in 2020. The burden of these cases was disproportionately concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, two regions that have seen the highest surge in sugary drink consumption in recent years. This rise has been attributed to soft drink companies seeking new markets in developing countries, as sales have declined in North America and Europe.

The New York Times reported that the projected 340,000 deaths mark a significant increase compared to previous estimates. A 2015 study published in the journal Circulation had estimated that 184,000 deaths globally were attributable to sugary drink consumption in 2010.
