Taipei —  Taiwan's Disease Control Office reported two new local dengue fever cases, bringing the total number of cases in the latest outbreak to six.

The office stated that the two newly confirmed cases include a man in his 20s and a woman in her 70s, both residing in New Taipei City. The two patients began showing symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhea, and vomiting between Sept. 19 and 20. They had visited high-risk areas associated with previously confirmed cases.

This dengue fever outbreak is the first of the year in northern Taiwan, with all six confirmed patients having a history of activities in New Taipei City.

On Tuesday (Sept. 24), Taiwan's Environmental Office warned that recent heavy rains had caused flooding, and the week following such rainfalls is a critical period for dengue fever prevention.

As of Monday (Sept. 23), Taiwan has reported 172 local dengue fever cases this year, with eight cases occurring during the summer season. Additionally, 213 imported cases have been reported, a figure higher than during the same period in the last four years.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can be fatal, primarily affecting people in tropical and subtropical regions. Symptoms include fever, nausea, and muscle and joint pain.
