Check for Possible Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

Check for Possible Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

The condition usually develops slowly and becomes more noticeable over time. Early medical assessment can help identify the cause of the symptoms, rule out other treatable conditions, and support appropriate care planning.

Possible Warning Signs

Memory Problems

Memory loss is one of the most common early signs. A person may:

๐ Forget recently learned information

๐ Ask the same questions repeatedly

๐ Forget important appointments or events

๐ Misplace belongings frequently

๐ Rely increasingly on other people for reminders

Occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of ageing. Concern arises when memory problems occur repeatedly and interfere with daily life.

Decline in Thinking Skills

Alzheimer’s disease may affect reasoning and other cognitive abilities, including:

๐ Performing calculations

๐ Reading and understanding written information

๐ Writing clearly

๐ Planning everyday activities

๐ Solving familiar problems

๐ Following instructions or managing several steps in sequence

Activities that were previously easy may gradually become confusing or take much longer to complete.

Difficulty Using Language

A person may experience problems communicating, such as:

๐ Struggling to find familiar words

๐ Repeating words or sentences

๐ Losing track of a conversation

๐ Calling familiar objects by the wrong name

๐ Having difficulty understanding what others are saying

๐ Becoming less confident about speaking or joining conversations

Changes in Movement

Movement problems are not always an early feature of Alzheimer’s disease, but they may occur in later stages or indicate another neurological condition.

Possible changes include:

๐ Slower movement

๐ Muscle stiffness

๐ Twitching or abnormal movements

๐ Difficulty walking or maintaining balance

๐ Reduced coordination when completing familiar tasks

New movement abnormalities should be evaluated by a doctor rather than assumed to be caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

Behavioural or Personality Changes

Changes in brain function may affect mood, personality, and social behaviour.

A person may:

๐ Lose interest in their surroundings

๐ Withdraw from family or social activities

๐ Become unusually suspicious, anxious, irritable, or fearful

๐ Show less concern for other people

๐ Behave in ways that are noticeably different from their usual personality

๐ Experience reduced motivation or neglect personal care

Disorientation

A person may become confused about:

๐ Dates and time

๐ Their current location

๐ Familiar routes

๐ How they arrived somewhere

๐ The direction they should travel

They may become lost in a familiar neighbourhood or have difficulty finding rooms within their own home.

Other Conditions Can Cause Similar Symptoms

Memory loss and confusion do not always mean that a person has Alzheimer’s disease. Similar symptoms may result from:

๐ Depression or severe stress

๐ Sleep deprivation

๐ Vitamin B12 deficiency

๐ Thyroid disorders

๐ Medication side effects

๐ Infection

๐ Stroke

๐ Hearing or vision problems

๐ Other forms of dementia

A complete medical assessment is therefore necessary before making a diagnosis.

When to Consult a Doctor

Medical advice should be sought when memory or behavioural changes:

๐ Occur repeatedly

๐ Become progressively worse

๐ Interfere with work or daily activities

๐ Affect personal safety

๐ Cause the person to become lost

๐ Make it difficult to manage medication or finances

๐ Are noticed by family members or close friends

A doctor may assess memory, language, reasoning, mood, physical health, medication use, and the ability to perform daily activities. Blood tests or brain imaging may also be recommended.

Sudden confusion, facial weakness, difficulty speaking, severe headache, or weakness on one side of the body requires immediate medical attention because it may indicate a stroke or another emergency.

Early Assessment Matters

There is currently no single symptom that can confirm Alzheimer’s disease. Diagnosis requires a detailed medical evaluation.

Although Alzheimer’s disease cannot presently be cured, early assessment may help patients and families:

๐ Begin appropriate treatment and symptom management

๐ Address reversible causes of cognitive impairment

๐ Plan future healthcare and daily support

๐ Improve safety at home

๐ Maintain independence for as long as possible

Recognising persistent changes in memory, thinking, language, behaviour, movement, or orientation is an important first step towards receiving suitable medical care.
