Exclusive Interview: Dr. Natdanai Sukuma Explains the Differences Between Facelift and Thread Lift in Anti-Aging Care

As the demand for anti-aging solutions grows among aging professionals and health-conscious adults in Thailand, the cosmetic industry continues to evolve with a wide array of facial rejuvenation options. But two methods, in particular, often raise questions among those exploring their first steps toward a youthful appearance: the facelift and the thread lift.

To shed light on these procedures and guide the public toward informed decisions, ArokaGO News spoke with Dr. Natdanai Sukuma, known as Dr. Arm, a seasoned facial surgery specialist at UR Clinic in Nakhon Ratchasima. With more than 10 years of experience in facelift surgery, Dr. Natdanai offers deep insights into the pros, cons, and common misconceptions about these two popular treatments.

 “Many patients walk in thinking a thread lift is just a cheaper version of a facelift—or vice versa,” Dr. Natdanai shared. “But in reality, they are completely different procedures with different goals, depths of treatment, and durations of results.”

Facelift: For Deep Correction and Long-Term Results

Dr. Natdanai explains that a facelift is a surgical procedure targeting deeper facial tissues, particularly the SMAS layer (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). Using advanced techniques like SMAS Lock, the procedure repositions and tightens facial muscles and skin to reverse visible signs of aging.

 “It’s particularly effective for sagging around the temples, cheeks, and jawline,” said Dr. Natdanai. “If done properly, the results can last up to 10 years and still look very natural.”

However, as with all major surgeries, a facelift requires general anesthesia and a recovery period of 1–2 weeks, making it more suitable for individuals aged 40 and above who have moderate to severe skin laxity and are in good general health.

 

Thread Lift: For Subtle Lifting and Minimal Downtime

In contrast, Dr. Natdanai describes the thread lift as a non-surgical alternative ideal for younger patients with early signs of aging.

 “A thread lift involves inserting dissolvable threads under the skin to lightly lift tissue and stimulate collagen,” he explained. “There’s little downtime—typically just 1 to 3 days—and no need for anesthesia.”

Thread lifts are well-suited for people aged 30 to 45 with mild skin laxity. While the method is less invasive and more affordable, Dr. Natdanai points out that results typically last 12 to 18 months, and the technique cannot provide the same deep structural correction as a facelift.

How to Choose: Surgery vs. Simplicity

So how should someone choose between the two? Dr. Natdanai says it depends on multiple factors—not just age or appearance.

 “We consider the degree of sagging, skin elasticity, the patient’s health, how long they want the results to last, and whether they’re mentally and physically prepared for surgery and recovery,” he noted.

Crucially, he warns against making decisions based on social media trends or price points.

 “It’s important to consult with a qualified and experienced specialist who can evaluate your individual needs,” Dr. Natdanai advised. “What works for one person might not be right for another.”
