FDA Issues Warning: Bacteria, Yeast, and Mold Found in Hair Dye Product – Potential Health Risk

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning after testing a cosmetic product, Praithong Organic Henna Powder, sampled from Bangkok Port. The tested lot (Lot No. 2408-05, MFD. 08/2024, EXP. 08/2027) was analyzed on October 18, 2024, by the Department of Medical Sciences. Results showed microbial contamination exceeding the legal safety standard.

Laboratory tests detected a total aerobic plate count of 19,000 colony-forming units per gram, significantly higher than the permitted limit of 1,000 colony-forming units per gram. This indicates the presence of bacteria, yeast, and mold that could pose health risks to consumers. The product is therefore classified as prohibited for production, import, or sale under the Ministry of Public Health’s regulations on cosmetic safety.

Advice for Consumers:

• Purchase cosmetics only from reliable and verifiable sources.

• Ensure products have complete labeling in Thai, including product name, trade name, type of cosmetic, ingredient list, usage instructions, manufacturer/importer details, net weight/volume, batch number, production and expiry dates, warnings (if any), and registration number.

• Retailers should source products only from trustworthy distributors with proper sales documentation.
