Manila — Teodoro Herbosa, the Philippine Secretary of Health, announced on Tuesday (Dec. 17) that the country has recorded 52 cases of mpox (formerly monkeypox) and one death from the disease this year.
Of the 52 cases, 47 were male and 5 were female, ranging in age from 6 months to 66 years. Herbosa noted that none of the cases were epidemiologically linked, and no close contacts of the patients have tested positive for the disease.
Notably, on Aug. 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to a rapid increase in cases across several regions in Africa.
