Research predicts global cancer death toll will nearly double by 2050

Sydney — A study published on Wednesday (Nov. 6) indicates that Australian researchers predict the number of cancer-related deaths worldwide will almost double annually by 2050.

The study forecasts that cancer-related deaths globally will reach 18.5 million in 2050, an increase of 89.7% from 9.7 million in 2022.

The study, led by Habtamu Bizuayehu from the University of Queensland, analyzed cancer cases and mortality rates for 36 types of cancer across 185 countries. Using these rates, the researchers projected future cancer cases and deaths, applying the United Nations’ population growth estimates for 2050. The study predicts that global cancer cases will rise by 76.6%, from 20 million in 2022 to 35.3 million in 2050.

It is expected that cancer cases and deaths will increase nearly threefold by 2050 in countries with a low Human Development Index (HDI), compared to moderate increases in high HDI countries.

The report forecasts that lung cancer will remain the leading cause of cancer deaths by 2050, accounting for around 19.2% of global cancer deaths, up from 18.7% in 2022.

The research also suggests that between 2022 and 2050, cancer cases and deaths will increase slightly more in men than in women.
