Kampala — Uganda's Ministry of Health reported the detection of 33 new mpox (monkeypox) cases, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 69. The new cases are spread across 11 districts experiencing outbreaks, with the majority of infections linked to sexual contact.
The report highlighted that Nakaseke District in central Uganda registered 21 cases, becoming a major hotspot for the mpox virus. Local bar activities and the residence of fishing communities have contributed significantly to the virus's spread in this area.
The Ministry, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, has strengthened preventive measures against mpox, including enhanced surveillance, patient management, risk communication, and community engagement. Public awareness campaigns have also been intensified to prevent further transmission.
The WHO declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in August, emphasizing the global risk of increased outbreaks.
