After Tooth Extraction: Should You Choose Dentures or Dental Implants?

Understanding these options can help you decide whether removable dentures, a dental bridge, or a dental implant is most suitable for you.

Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth

Removable Dentures

Removable dentures are artificial teeth that can be taken out and put back in by the wearer. They are usually made from acrylic resin or a combination of acrylic and a metal framework.

Advantages

๐ More affordable than other replacement options

๐ Relatively simple to make

๐ Requires less treatment time

Disadvantages

๐ Must be removed for cleaning

๐ May require more careful maintenance

๐ Can break or become damaged if not handled properly

๐ Poorly maintained dentures may negatively affect the remaining teeth and gums

๐ Appearance, comfort, and chewing efficiency may not be as good as other methods

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a fixed replacement that uses an artificial tooth connected to the neighbouring teeth. It works like a bridge across the space left by the missing tooth.

Advantages

๐ Functions similarly to natural teeth

๐ Does not need to be removed by the patient

๐ The treatment process is generally not complicated

Disadvantages

๐ The neighbouring teeth must be reshaped to support the bridge

๐ The supporting teeth may become sensitive, decayed, or damaged

๐ In some cases, the supporting teeth may lose vitality and require further treatment

๐ When one supporting tooth develops a problem, the entire bridge may need to be removed and replaced

Dental Implant

A dental implant involves placing an artificial tooth root made from titanium or ceramic into the jawbone. Once the implant is stable, a dental crown is attached so that the replacement looks and functions similarly to a natural tooth.

Advantages

๐ Strong and durable

๐ Provides chewing ability close to that of a natural tooth

๐ Offers a natural-looking appearance

๐ Does not require the neighbouring teeth to be reshaped

๐ Helps replace the missing tooth independently without relying on adjacent teeth

Disadvantages

๐ The treatment process takes longer

๐ The procedure is more complex than dentures or bridges

๐ The initial cost may be higher

However, dental implant technology has continued to improve, making the treatment more effective and cost-efficient over the long term.

Which Option Is Better?

Dental implants are often the option most recommended by dentists because they provide strength, function, and appearance that are close to natural teeth. They also avoid the need to reshape the neighbouring teeth.

However, the most suitable choice depends on several factors, including:

๐ Your oral and dental health

๐ The condition and amount of jawbone

๐ The health of the surrounding gums

๐ The number and location of missing teeth

๐ Your budget

๐ The time available for treatment

๐ Your personal comfort and preferences

A dental examination is therefore necessary before making a decision. The dentist can assess your teeth, gums, and jawbone and recommend the most appropriate method for replacing the missing tooth.

Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) in Children: Symptoms & Care

Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) in Children Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a common bleeding disorder in children caused by a low platelet count.
