Dangers of Sun Exposure & How to Protect Your Skin

What is Sunlight?

Sunlight consists of different types of radiation and light, categorized by wavelength:

1. Visible Light (45%)

๐ Low energy

๐ Can cause skin darkening and worsen pigmentation over time

2. Invisible Light (Ultraviolet - UV)

UV radiation is divided into:

๐ UVA - causes skin aging, wrinkles, and pigmentation

๐ UVB - causes sunburn and increases the risk of skin cancer

๐ UVC - mostly blocked by the atmosphere

3. Infrared Light (50%)

๐ Produces heat

๐ Infrared A contributes to premature aging (photoaging)

๐ Damages collagen and causes wrinkles through free radical formation

How Dangerous are UVA & UVB?

๐ UVA - Premature aging, dark spots, wrinkles

๐ UVB - Sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer

How to Protect Yourself from Sunlight

Avoid sun exposure between 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM:

๐ Long-sleeved clothing

๐ Wide-brim hats

๐ Sunglasses (helps prevent cataracts)

Why Sunscreen is Important

Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV radiation, including:

๐ UVA

๐ UVB

๐ UVC

Without protection, UV exposure can:

๐ Accelerate skin aging

๐ Increase the risk of skin cancer

Understanding SPF & PA

๐ SPF (Sun Protection Factor) - Protection against UVB

๐ PA (Protection Grade of UVA) - Protection against UVA

What Happens If You Don’t Use Sunscreen?

๐ Increased risk of skin cancer

๐ Sunburn

๐ Wrinkles and premature aging

๐ Uneven skin tone and dark spots

๐ Loss of skin elasticity

Types of Sunscreen

1. Chemical Sunscreen

๐ Absorbs UV rays

๐ Lightweight but may cause irritation

๐ Needs reapplication

2. Physical Sunscreen

๐ Reflects UV rays

๐ Protects against UVA, UVB, visible light, and infrared

๐ Less irritating, suitable for sensitive skin

How to Choose Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

๐ Oily / Combination Skin: Gel, lotion, or oil-free formulas

๐ Normal Skin: Any type is suitable

๐ Dry Skin: Cream-based with moisturizing ingredients

๐ Sensitive Skin: Alcohol-free

Summary

Sunlight has benefits, but overexposure can damage the skin and increase cancer risk.

The best protection is:

๐ Avoid peak sunlight

๐ Wear protective clothing

๐ Use sunscreen every day
