Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Although the basic principle of inserting an acupuncture needle may seem similar to using an injection needle, acupuncture needles are much smaller and thinner. As a result, the sensation is usually very different from receiving an injection.
During acupuncture, patients may feel a slight prick similar to an ant bite when the needle first enters the skin. Once the needle reaches the intended point, they may experience sensations such as:
๐ A mild aching or heavy feeling
๐ Tingling
๐ Numbness
๐ Tightness or pressure
๐ A sensation spreading along a particular area
These sensations are generally part of the body’s response to acupuncture. However, the experience may vary depending on the treatment area, individual sensitivity, and the practitioner’s technique.
Cleanliness and safety are also essential parts of acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture should therefore be performed at a trustworthy clinic or hospital that follows appropriate hygiene standards. The treatment area should be cleaned, practitioners should wash their hands, and sterile acupuncture needles should be used to reduce the risk of infection.
When performed correctly by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture usually causes only mild and temporary discomfort rather than severe pain.
