Feeling Dizzy When Bending Down?

A seemingly minor symptom such as feeling dizzy when bending down may lead many people to assume that it is normal and will improve after a short rest. However, in this patient’s case, the decision to undergo a medical examination revealed a condition far more serious than expected.
The examination showed severe narrowing of a major artery supplying the left side of the brain. Calcium deposits had accumulated along the artery wall, placing the patient at risk of complete blockage.
Had the condition been detected later and the artery become fully blocked, the patient could have developed paralysis on the right side of the body and lost the ability to speak.
Arteries Do Not Become Narrowed in a Single Day
Many people may have heard someone say, “They suddenly had a stroke” or “Their brain artery suddenly became blocked.”
In reality, changes in the blood vessels may develop and accumulate over a long period without producing noticeable symptoms.
When risk factors are present, the artery walls may gradually become thicker as fatty deposits or calcium build up. This causes the space through which blood flows to become progressively narrower.
Mild narrowing may gradually worsen until the artery is almost completely or fully blocked, eventually leading to a stroke.
What Factors Increase the Risk of Narrowed Arteries?
Several risk factors were identified in this case:
๐ Being overweight
๐ High blood cholesterol that had not yet been treated
๐ Rising blood pressure
๐ Snoring
๐ Obstructive sleep apnoea
These factors can affect blood vessel health. When they persist over time, they may cause the artery walls to thicken and the space inside the vessels to become narrower.
A major concern is that some patients may have no obvious symptoms until the artery has become severely narrowed or completely blocked.
What Happens If an Artery Supplying the Left Side of the Brain Becomes Blocked?
The left side of the brain plays an important role in language and in controlling movement on the right side of the body.
If an artery supplying the left side of the brain becomes blocked, the patient may experience:
๐ Weakness or paralysis of the right arm and leg
๐ Slurred speech
๐ Inability to speak
๐ Difficulty understanding language
๐ Loss of the ability to perform everyday activities independently
The severity of the symptoms depends on the location of the blockage, how long the brain is deprived of blood, and how quickly the patient receives treatment.
How Is Severe Arterial Narrowing Treated?
Treatment depends on the severity and location of the narrowing, as well as the assessment of a medical specialist.
For some patients, doctors may prescribe medication to control risk factors, such as antiplatelet drugs and cholesterol-lowering medication. Significant lifestyle changes may also be required.
When an artery is severely narrowed, the doctor may consider a procedure to help reopen it, such as balloon angioplasty or the placement of a stent, depending on the individual patient’s condition.
Detecting the abnormality before complete blockage occurs is therefore very important. Early detection allows doctors to assess the condition and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
How Can Narrowed Brain Arteries Be Prevented?
In addition to following the doctor’s treatment plan, controlling risk factors and changing daily habits are essential.
Recommended health measures include:
๐ Maintaining a healthy body weight
๐ Checking and controlling blood cholesterol levels
๐ Controlling blood pressure
๐ Undergoing an assessment for sleep apnoea when abnormal or severe snoring is present
๐ Drinking enough water
๐ Performing appropriate cardiovascular exercise regularly
๐ Taking prescribed medication and following the doctor’s advice carefully
A Stroke May Not Happen as Suddenly as It Appears
When a stroke occurs, many people say that the patient had previously appeared healthy and had never shown any unusual symptoms. They may wonder why the stroke happened so suddenly.
The truth is that the artery may not have narrowed or become blocked in a single day.
We may simply have been unable to see the gradual changes taking place inside the body as the artery became increasingly narrow.
Minor symptoms such as dizziness, light-headedness, or other unusual changes should therefore not be ignored, particularly among people who have risk factors for stroke.
Early Detection May Help Prevent Paralysis
This case is an example of detecting an abnormality before a serious event occurred. If the artery had become completely blocked, the consequences could have included paralysis, loss of speech, and major effects on the lives of both the patient and their family.
Health screening and risk assessment before severe symptoms develop can therefore be an important part of preventive healthcare.
A stroke may not occur completely “out of nowhere.”
We may simply be unaware that an artery has been gradually narrowing until the day it becomes blocked.
Do not wait until paralysis occurs before beginning to care for your health. Identify your risks early so that preventive measures can be planned in time through the “Life Without Paralysis Programme.”
