Sexually Transmitted Infection: HPV Is Dangerous for Both Men and Women

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant cause of persistent viral infection transmitted through sexual contact. HPV infection is common in both men and women. More than 200 genotypes have been identified, with HPV types 16 and 18 being the high-risk strains most strongly associated with cancer.
Transmission
- Sexual contact: The primary mode of transmission, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex, as well as skin-to-skin genital contact.
- Sharing personal items: Infection may also occur through sharing towels, wipes, or other contaminated personal items.
Symptoms
Most infected individuals have no symptoms or only small lesions around the genital area. Symptoms may include itching or inflammation of the vagina, abnormal vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse, or genital warts.
- Genital warts: Soft, flesh-colored or pink raised lesions occurring on the genital or anal area.
- Cancer: Persistent infection with high-risk HPV types may increase the risk of cervical cancer, anal cancer, oral and throat cancer, vaginal cancer, and cancers of the genital organs.
Prevention
- HPV vaccination: HPV vaccination is recommended from 9 years of age to help build immunity and reduce the risk of HPV-related diseases in both females and males.
- Regular screening: Women should undergo regular cervical cancer screening and HPV testing, such as the HPV DNA Test.
- Safe sexual practices: Use condoms during every sexual encounter. Although condoms do not provide 100% protection because HPV can infect areas not covered by a condom, they help reduce the risk of transmission. Avoid having multiple sexual partners.
