Supporting Oocyte Maturation: How OMM Medium Helps Improve Blastocyst Development
Making the Most of the Critical Window Before Fertilization in IVF
In the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF), patients are often familiar with steps like ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture, and transfer. However, between oocyte retrieval and fertilization lies a brief yet critical window the final maturation of the oocyte, which can have a profound impact on the overall outcome.
One of the tools designed to optimize this window is Oocyte Maturation Medium (OMM), a specialized culture medium now gaining attention in clinical practice.
What is OMM?
After retrieval, oocytes are collected not as bare cells, but surrounded by cumulus cells, forming what is called a Cumulus Oocyte Complex (COC).
In standard IVF protocols, these COCs are typically incubated in Fertilization Medium (FM) for a few hours before insemination or ICSI. However, recent studies have suggested that FM may not provide the most supportive environment for oocyte maturation, especially for oocytes that have not yet reached the metaphase II (MII) stage.
OMM was developed as a targeted medium to support the final phase of oocyte maturation, aiming to enhance oocyte quality and improve fertilization and blastocyst outcomes.
What’s Inside OMM? A Composition Tailored for Final Oocyte Maturation
OMM is designed to mimic the conditions needed for in vivo oocyte maturation. According to product data sheets, OMM contains:
1. Basic ions and energy substrates:
2. Over 20 amino acids:
3. Vitamins and cofactors:
4. Antioxidants:
5. Human Serum Albumin (HSA):
Does OMM Improve Outcomes? Research Insights
In a 2022 study, 60 IVF patients were divided into two groups: one using OMM before insemination, and one using conventional FM only. While several indicators showed a trend favoring OMM, the most statistically significant improvement was seen in blastocyst formation on Day 5:
| Parameter | +OMM Group | -OMM Group | P value |
| MII oocytes (%) | 90.7% ± 9.1 | 85.8% ± 14.1 | 0.254 |
| Fertilization rate (%) | 89.9% ± 10.0 | 86.5% ± 12.2 | 0.252 |
| Good quality embryos on Day 3. (%) | 70.8% ± 19.1 | 62.1% ± 23.7 | 0.122 |
| Blastocyst formation on Day 5 (%) | 73.1% ± 20.1 | 55.8% ± 18.2 | 0.008 |

These results indicate that OMM may help improve oocyte developmental potential, especially in cases where blastocyst formation has been a challenge.
Who May Benefit from OMM?
There are no strict criteria mandating OMM usage, but clinical experience and research suggest it may benefit:
- Patients with asynchronous follicle development, yielding immature oocytes
- Previous IVF cycles with low MII oocyte rates
- Poor embryo development or low blastocyst conversion rates
- Patients planning for PGT, where maximizing usable blastocysts is crucial
- Any case where oocyte status on retrieval day suggests a potential benefit from extended in vitro maturation.
Jetanin’s Practice and Outcomes
At Jetanin Hospital, the embryology lab has implemented OMM in select IVF cycles, along with a tailored protocol and internal workflow developed by our team. Clinical application of OMM has shown promising results, such as higher oocyte maturation (MII) rates, better blastocyst yield, and more embryos available for testing or freezing.
OMM use is individualized, and the decision is made jointly by doctors and embryologists depending on the follicular and oocyte status on the day before retrieval.

Waking Up Tired? It Could Be a Sign of Adrenal Fatigue
Every morning, your adrenal glands quietly get to work producing the hormones that help you feel refreshed and ready to take on the day, whether that's a busy schedule at the office or simply the energy to enjoy your morning routine. So when a bright, easy start to the day starts to feel harder to come by, and even things you usually enjoy feel like an effort, it's worth paying attention. This shift is often the body's way of asking for support a sign sometimes referred to as adrenal fatigue.

What are the Common Causes of Infertility?
Many people grow up looking forward to the day they can have children. However, many people find that they’re unable to have children no matter how hard they try. If you are having difficulty getting pregnant, the good news is that treatment is often available, meaning you can still have the family of your dreams. However, before you can treat infertility, you first need to know what is causing it, and there are several potential causes. There are numerous potential causes of infertility, and each can be treated in different ways, if at all. Below are some of the most common causes of all.
