What Is Caesium?

Naturally occurring caesium is not radioactive. The only naturally stable isotope is caesium-133, written as ¹³³Cs.
Radioactive Caesium
Nuclear fission involving uranium, such as that occurring in nuclear reactors or nuclear explosions, can produce radioactive isotopes of caesium. The two most significant are:
๐ Caesium-134, or ¹³⁴Cs
๐ Caesium-137, or ¹³⁷Cs
These isotopes release ionising radiation as they decay into more stable elements. Their emissions may include beta particles and gamma radiation.
Radioactive Half-Life
A half-life is the time required for half of a radioactive substance to decay.
๐ Caesium-134 has a half-life of approximately two years.
๐ Caesium-137 has a half-life of approximately 30 years.
Because caesium-137 decays slowly, it can remain in contaminated environments for many decades.
What Happens When Caesium Enters the Environment?
The environmental behaviour of caesium depends on its chemical form and where it is released.
In the Air
Radioactive caesium released into the atmosphere may attach to dust and other airborne particles. These particles can travel considerable distances before falling onto land or water.
In Water
Many caesium compounds dissolve readily in water. Radioactive caesium may therefore enter rivers, lakes, groundwater, and marine environments.
Its movement depends on factors such as:

๐ Soil composition
๐ Organic matter
๐ The presence of clay minerals
In Soil
Caesium can bind strongly to clay and soil particles, particularly near the ground surface. It therefore tends not to move deeply through certain types of soil.

๐ Consumption of crops grown in contaminated areas
๐ Consumption of animals that have eaten contaminated plants
Radioactive decay is the main natural process that gradually reduces the amount of caesium-134 and caesium-137 in the environment.
How Can People Be Exposed to Caesium?
People are normally exposed to very small amounts of stable caesium through air, water, and food. These natural exposure levels are generally not considered harmful.
Exposure to radioactive caesium may occur through several routes.
Inhalation
A person may inhale contaminated dust or airborne particles following an accidental radioactive release.
Ingestion
Radioactive caesium may enter the body through:

Uncontrolled Radioactive Waste
Living or working near an improperly controlled radioactive-waste site may increase the risk of exposure.
How Does Caesium Affect Health?
The health effects differ significantly between stable and radioactive caesium.
Stable Caesium
It is unlikely that people will be exposed to enough naturally occurring stable caesium to cause harmful effects.
Very high doses have caused changes in activity and behaviour in animal studies, but such exposure is not typical in everyday life.
Radioactive Caesium
Radioactive caesium can expose tissues to ionising radiation from outside or inside the body.
When swallowed or inhaled, caesium behaves in a way similar to potassium and can be distributed throughout the body, particularly within soft tissues and muscles.
The seriousness of the health effects depends on:
๐ The amount of radioactive material
๐ The type of radiation
๐ The duration of exposure
๐ Whether exposure is internal or external
๐ The distance from the source
๐ The person’s age and health
Effects of High Radiation Exposure
Very high exposure to radioactive caesium may damage cells and tissues and cause acute radiation syndrome.
Possible symptoms include:
๐ Nausea and vomiting
๐ Diarrhoea
๐ Extreme tiredness
๐ Skin injury
๐ Reduced blood-cell production
๐ Increased susceptibility to infection
๐ Bleeding
๐ Damage to internal organs
๐ Loss of consciousness or coma
๐ Death in cases of extremely high exposure
Symptoms may not always appear immediately. Anyone suspected of significant radioactive exposure requires urgent specialist assessment.
Can Caesium Cause Cancer?
There is insufficient evidence that ordinary exposure to stable, non-radioactive caesium causes cancer.
Radioactive caesium, however, emits ionising radiation. Ionising radiation can damage DNA and increase the long-term risk of cancer.
The level of risk depends mainly on the radiation dose. Higher doses and prolonged exposure generally carry a greater risk.
Animal studies involving high doses of caesium-137 radiation have shown an increased incidence of certain tumours, including mammary tumours. These findings support the established understanding that substantial exposure to ionising radiation may cause cancer.
Radioactive caesium exposure does not mean that a person will definitely develop cancer. Risk must be assessed according to the measured or estimated radiation dose.
How Does Caesium Affect Children?
Children may be affected by radioactive caesium in similar ways to adults, but developing tissues can be more sensitive to ionising radiation.
Children may also receive a greater dose relative to body size after consuming contaminated food or water.
Exposure During Pregnancy
A developing baby may be particularly sensitive to high radiation doses, especially during certain stages of pregnancy.
High prenatal exposure to ionising radiation has been associated with:
๐ Impaired growth
๐ Developmental abnormalities
๐ Effects on brain development
๐ Reduced intellectual ability
๐ Increased long-term cancer risk
Animal studies have also found congenital abnormalities following sufficiently high radiation exposure.
The effects depend strongly on the dose and the stage of pregnancy at which exposure occurs.
How Can the Risk of Exposure Be Reduced?
Natural stable caesium is present in the environment at very low levels and cannot be completely avoided. These background levels are not normally a cause for concern.
In the event of a radioactive release, follow instructions from public-health and radiation-safety authorities.
Recommendations may include:
๐ Remaining indoors
๐ Closing doors and windows
๐ Turning off ventilation systems that draw in outdoor air
๐ Avoiding contaminated food or water
๐ Removing outer clothing after possible exposure
๐ Washing exposed skin and hair gently
๐ Avoiding contaminated dust, soil, or objects
๐ Leaving the affected area when officially instructed
Do not take potassium iodide to protect against radioactive caesium unless instructed by health authorities. Potassium iodide protects only the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine and does not protect against caesium.
Are Medical Tests Available for Caesium Exposure?
Specialised tests can help determine whether a person has received significant radiation exposure or has radioactive caesium inside the body.
Tests for the Effects of Radiation
Doctors may examine:
๐ Changes in blood-cell counts
๐ Abnormalities in chromosomes
๐ Symptoms of acute radiation injury
These tests may indicate that significant radiation exposure has occurred, but they may not identify caesium as the specific source.
Tests for Radioactive Caesium in the Body
Specialised laboratories may test:
๐ Blood
๐ Urine
๐ Stool
๐ Saliva in selected circumstances
๐ The whole body using radiation-detection equipment
Whole-body counting can measure gamma radiation emitted by radioactive material inside the body.
These tests are not routinely available in ordinary clinics. Samples may need to be sent to a specialised radiation laboratory, or the patient may need to attend a facility equipped for radiological assessment.
What to Do After Suspected Exposure
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to radioactive caesium should:
๐ Move away from the suspected source.
๐ Avoid touching or carrying the object.
๐ Keep other people away from the area.
๐ Contact emergency services or radiation-safety authorities.
๐ Follow decontamination instructions.
๐ Seek medical assessment when advised.
A suspected radioactive object should never be opened, dismantled, moved, or disposed of without assistance from trained authorities.
