5 Common Myths About Breast Cancer—Debunked!

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Thailand. Despite increased awareness, misunderstandings and myths about breast cancer remain widespread. Let’s clear up five popular misconceptions—and see whether you’ve believed any of them, too.

Myth #1: Bigger Breasts Mean a Higher Risk of Breast Cancer

Not true.
Breast size does not directly increase the risk of breast cancer. Risk is influenced by factors such as age, genetics, hormonal exposure, lifestyle, and family history—not by breast size.

Myth #2: Wearing Bras Causes Breast Cancer

False.
There is no scientific evidence showing that bras—whether tight, underwired, or worn for long periods—cause or increase the risk of breast cancer. Compression or restricted lymph flow from clothing has not been proven to lead to cancer.

Myth #3: Breast Surgery Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer

Incorrect.
Modern breast augmentation typically uses silicone implants, which have been studied extensively over many years. Current evidence shows no link between breast implants and an increased risk of breast cancer.

Myth #4: Men Can’t Get Breast Cancer

Untrue.
While breast cancer is much less common in men, it can still occur. Because awareness is lower among men, diagnosis may be delayed—making education and early evaluation important for everyone.

Myth #5: Soy Milk, Tofu, or Coconut Oil Increase Breast Cancer Risk

Not supported by evidence.
Soy products and coconut oil contain compounds that may resemble estrogen, but no scientific proof shows that consuming soy milk, tofu, or coconut oil causes breast cancer. In fact, moderate soy intake is considered safe for most people.

Why Screening Matters

Early detection saves lives. Women aged 35 and above are recommended to undergo annual breast cancer screening, including:
          •   Mammography, combined with
          •   Breast ultrasound
Detecting breast cancer at an early stage significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates.

Take Action for Your Health If you have concerns, risk factors, or are due for screening, professional guidance is essential.
