7 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty Liver Disease is a condition in which fat accumulates within liver cells. When fat makes up more than 5–10% of the liver’s weight, it is considered fatty liver disease. This can lead to liver inflammation, liver cell damage, and the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis), which may eventually progress to cirrhosis. If the condition advances to cirrhosis, it can no longer be cured with medication or medical procedures. Treatment at that stage focuses on managing symptoms and reducing liver fat through lifestyle changes and medical guidance.
Causes of Fatty Liver Disease can be divided into 2 main groups
1.Caused by alcohol consumption, where the severity of the disease depends on the type, amount, and duration of alcohol intake
2.Caused by other risk factors, such as
- Metabolic-related conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood lipid levels
- Regular consumption of high-calorie foods such as carbohydrates, sugar, and fats
- Side effects from certain medications such as chemotherapy drugs, some antibiotics, antiviral medications, steroids, and hormone-related drugs
Ways to prevent and reduce the risk of Fatty Liver Disease include
1. If overweight, aim to lose weight safely, targeting about 1-2 kg per month
2. Exercise regularly with aerobic activities such as walking, running, or cycling at least 5 days per week, 30 minutes per session
3. Eat a healthy diet, especially low-fat, high-fiber, and low-calorie foods
4. If you have diabetes or high blood lipids, manage them properly by taking prescribed medications, controlling your diet, and exercising
5. Avoid taking medications or supplements that are not prescribed by a doctor
6. Avoid alcohol consumption
7. Get regular health check-ups
