Causes of Bloating

In TCM, bloating is considered a sign of an imbalance in the body. Causes of bloating can be categorized into several groups, including:

   1. Energy imbalance: The functioning of the digestive system is important in processing food. The flow of qi and blood must be balanced. If there is an imbalance, gas can build up in the intestines.

   2. Improper diet: Eating foods that are difficult to digest, foods that are high in fat, or foods that cause gas, such as beans, grains, and some vegetables, can cause bloating.

3.Stress and emotions: Stress can affect the functioning of the digestive system, and can cause bloating.

4.Other health problems: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or gastritis can cause bloating.

TCM treatment guidelines for bloating

1. Diagnosis

Diagnoses in TCM begin with an interview with the patient to understand their symptoms and medical history. Other symptoms, such as sleep, diet, and stress, are also examined. The doctor will also check their pulse and look at the condition of their tongue to help make a diagnosis. Treatment depends on the specific symptoms.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment method that is often used by Chinese medicine practitioners to relieve flatulence. In Chinese medicine, specific acupuncture points are selected to stimulate the flow of energy (qi) and reduce the accumulation of gas in the digestive system. Commonly used acupuncture points are as follows:

   - Zhong Wan (中脘): This point is located in the middle of the abdomen, about 4 inches above the navel. This point helps stimulate the function of the stomach and intestines.

   - Pi Gu (脾区): This point is located about 3 inches below the navel. This point is related to the function of the spleen, which is involved in digestion and gas excretion.

   - San Yin Jiao (三阴交): Located on the inside of the ankle, about 3 inches above the ankle bone. This point helps balance the energy in the body and promotes the function of the digestive system.

   - He Gu (合谷): Located between the thumb and index finger of the hand. This point helps relieve stress and stimulates the digestive system.

  - Tian Zhu (天柱): Located on the back of the neck, this point helps relieve tension and improves the digestive system.

   - Yao Yan (腰眼): Located on the waist, this point helps stimulate the digestive system and relieves associated pain.

3. Using Chinese herbal medicine

Chinese medicine practitioners often use herbal medicine to balance the body and relieve flatulence. Some of the most popular herbs used are:

   - Chen Pi (陈皮): Helps stimulate the flow of stomach qi, reducing bloating.

   - Ban Xia (半夏): Has properties that aid digestion and eliminate heat from the body.

   - Sheng Jiang (生姜): Fresh ginger helps relieve nausea and flatulence by stimulating the digestive system.

   - Lai Fu Zi (莱菔子): Helps expel gas from the intestines and relieve flatulence.

The use of herbal medicine must be consulted with a Chinese medicine practitioner to be appropriate for each individual's condition.

4. Lifestyle changes

TCM practitioners also often recommend lifestyle changes to help reduce bloating, such as:

   1. Eating right: Avoid foods that cause gas and eat foods that are easy to digest, such as rice porridge, soups, and easily digested vegetables.

   2. Exercise: Regular exercise stimulates the digestive system and reduces stress.

   3. Stress management: Meditation, yoga, or engaging in activities you enjoy can help relieve stress and benefit your digestive system.
