Colic in Infants: Symptoms, Causes & How to Soothe Your Baby

It's common for new parents to experience a situation where their newborn cries continuously, no matter how hard they try to soothe them. The more the baby cries, the more worried the parents become. This article introduces infant colic-why it happens and how to deal with it effectively.

Colic Symptoms Every New Parent Should Know

Colic is a condition where babies cry for prolonged periods without any apparent reason. It usually happens at the same time each day and can last for hours-often in the afternoon into the evening or from early evening into late night.
This condition affects otherwise healthy infants. While the exact cause is still unknown, there are several contributing factors. Colic typically appears in the first 2-3 weeks after birth, intensifies around 4-8 weeks, and usually resolves by the age of 3- 4 months.

Common Colic Symptoms

• Inconsolable crying, sometimes holding breath until face turns red
• Clenched fiata
• Drawing legs up toward the belly
• Hard or tight abdomen
• Frequent or absent flatulence

Causes of Infant Colic

Colic may be due to the baby adjusting to life outside the womb. It takes time for newborns to adapt to their new environment. Factors may include intestinal gas, immature digestion, or food sensitivities. It affects approximately 20% of babies worldwide. Potential causes include:
• Swallowing too much air while breastfeeding or crying
• Food allergies or sensitivities
• Overfeeding or underfeeding
• Headache
• Digestive issues, such as bloating or gas
• Emotional triggers like irritability, fear, or excitement
• Environmental stimuli like loud noises, bright lights, or cigarette smoke
• Maternal stress or anxiety

Is Colic Dangerous?

Colic is not dangerous and usually goes away on its own. However, it can cause stress and emotional strain for parents, potentially leading to postpartum depression or fatigue.

How to Cope with Colic

Since the exact cause of infant colic is unknown, there is no specific cure. However, parents can ease their baby's discomfort with the following strategies:
• Observe your baby after feedings to check for discomfort or food intolerance
• Closely monitor your baby's condition
• Soothe with lullabies or soft music with a slow rhythm to relax and help the baby sleep
• Avoid using electronics like TVs or mobile phones around the baby, as the lights and sounds may overstimulate them
• Dress the baby in comfortable clothing-use breathable fabrics or layer for warmth in cooler environments
• Gently rock the baby in your arms to provide warmth and a sense of safety

Most importantly, parents should remain calm and patient while caring for their baby. If overwhelmed, they should seek help from family, friends, or professionals.

When to See a Doctor

• Crying continuously for over 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks
• Fever
• Intense crying accompanied by vomiting
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Other concerning symptoms like loss of appetite, refusal to breastfeed, black or bloody stools
If your baby shows unusual crying patterns or other symptoms, it's essential to consult a doctor. Colic may not be the only issue an accurate diagnosis is key.
Even though colic is not a serious condition, if your baby's crying is accompanied by unusual physical symptoms, visit Synphaet Children's Hospital Ramintra-a leading pediatric hospital in Bangkok, where specialized pediatricians are ready to help.

Adenovirus in Children: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Prevention

Adenovirus can be transmitted from person to person through direct contact, inhalation of droplets containing the virus, or consuming contaminated food or water. It is not a new virus-it has been around for a long time, is highly resistant to environmental conditions, and spreads easily, leading to periodic outbreaks.
