Diabetes: A Silent Threat That Should Not Be Ignored

Diabetes is no longer a distant health issue. Statistics show that over 3.3 million people in Thailand are living with diabetes, and the number continues to increase by approximately 300,000 cases annually.

Recognizing the warning signs early is crucial, especially before the body develops insulin resistance, which is a key factor leading to diabetes.

8 Checklist: Are You at Risk of Diabetes?

1. Genetics

If either of your parents has diabetes, your risk increases to about 30%. The risk may rise to 60% if both parents have the condition.

2. Overweight or Obesity

A lifestyle involving high consumption of sugary, fatty, and salty foods combined with a lack of physical activity can accelerate insulin resistance.

3. High Blood Lipid Levels

Particularly when triglyceride levels are high while HDL (good cholesterol) levels are low.

4. High Blood Pressure

Hypertension and diabetes often occur together. People with high blood pressure should regularly monitor their blood sugar levels.

5. History of Gestational Diabetes

Women who develop diabetes during pregnancy should be cautious, as about half may develop diabetes within five years after delivery.

6. Giving Birth to a Baby Weighing Over 4 kg

This may indicate that the mother had abnormally high blood sugar levels during pregnancy.

7. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Hormonal imbalance and irregular menstrual cycles associated with PCOS can increase the risk of developing diabetes.

8. Age Over 35 Years

As people age, the body naturally becomes more resistant to insulin. Therefore, annual health screenings are recommended.
