Four Common Urinary Tract Disorders

Urinary tract disorders refer to abnormalities affecting the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. The four most common urinary tract disorders include:

1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) - Caused by bacterial infection, most commonly affecting women. It may lead to cystitis (bladder infection), and if left untreated, the infection may spread to the kidneys, resulting in pyelonephritis.

2. Urinary Tract Stones (Urolithiasis) - Stones that form in the kidneys, ureters, or urinary bladder due to the accumulation of mineral deposits. Inadequate fluid intake is one of the contributing factors.

3. Urinary Incontinence - Occurs due to weakening of the pelvic floor muscles or abnormalities of the nervous system that controls bladder function.

4. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) - Commonly found in older men. It may cause a weak urinary stream, increased urinary frequency, nocturia, or difficulty urinating.

When Should You See a Urologist?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should consult a urologist promptly:

  1. Abnormal urination: Dysuria, urinary frequency, urinary retention, or inability to urinate.
  2. Abnormal urine: Hematuria, cloudy urine, foul-smelling urine, or urine with an unusual odor.
  3. Pain: Lower abdominal pain, flank pain, or lower back pain.
  4. Associated symptoms: Fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting (commonly seen when the infection has spread to the kidneys).

Smoking Harms the Heart!

Smoking forces the heart to work harder by reducing the oxygen supply to the heart muscle. It causes the heart to beat faster and increases blood pressure, resulting in narrowing of the coronary arteries. Tobacco smoke contains numerous toxic substances that damage the walls of blood vessels and contribute to cardiovascular disease.
