Intermittent Fasting: How Can It Benefit the Body?

The fasting and eating schedule can be adapted to suit an individual’s lifestyle, health condition, and daily routine.

Common Intermittent Fasting Methods

16:8 Method

This is one of the most popular approaches.

๐ Fast for 16 consecutive hours.

๐ Eat within an eight-hour window.

For example, a person may eat between 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and fast overnight until noon the following day.

20:4 Method

This approach involves:

๐ Fasting for 20 consecutive hours.

๐ Eating within a four-hour window.

Because the eating period is short, it may be difficult to obtain enough protein, vitamins, minerals, and total energy. It is therefore not suitable for everyone.

5:2 Method

With the 5:2 method:

๐ Eat normally for five days of the week.

๐ Significantly reduce calorie intake on two non-consecutive days.

This method does not normally require complete fasting for two full days. Instead, calorie intake is usually reduced on fasting days.

Potential Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting may provide health benefits when it is practised appropriately and combined with nutritious food, sufficient sleep, and regular physical activity.

May Support Weight Management

Limiting the eating window may reduce overall calorie intake, which can support weight loss.

During fasting, insulin levels decrease and the body gradually begins using stored energy. However, weight loss still depends largely on the total amount and quality of food consumed.

Eating excessively during the feeding window can reduce or eliminate this benefit.

May Improve Insulin Sensitivity

Intermittent fasting may help improve the body’s response to insulin in some people.

Possible effects include:

๐ Lower fasting insulin levels

๐ Better blood glucose regulation

๐ Reduced risk of excessive fat storage

๐ Improved metabolic health

People with diabetes or those using blood glucose-lowering medication should not begin fasting without medical supervision because of the risk of hypoglycaemia.

May Help Preserve Muscle When Combined with Exercise

Intermittent fasting does not automatically increase muscle mass.

To preserve or build muscle, a person still needs:

๐ Adequate protein

๐ Sufficient total calories

๐ Resistance training

๐ Proper recovery and sleep

Growth hormone levels may temporarily increase during fasting, but this does not mean fasting alone will build muscle.

May Encourage Cellular Maintenance

Periods of fasting may activate cellular processes involved in energy regulation, stress resistance, and the breakdown of damaged cellular components.

One of these processes is called autophagy, in which cells recycle certain damaged or unnecessary components.

Most detailed findings about autophagy and prolonged fasting come from laboratory and animal research. The fasting duration required to produce meaningful clinical benefits in humans is not yet clearly established.

May Support Cardiometabolic Health

Some studies suggest that intermittent fasting may improve certain health markers, including:

๐ Body weight

๐ Waist circumference

๐ Blood pressure

๐ Blood glucose

๐ Triglycerides

๐ Some cholesterol measurements

The results vary between individuals, and intermittent fasting is not consistently superior to other calorie-controlled eating patterns.

May Simplify Daily Eating Routines

Some people find that eating fewer meals reduces the time spent:

๐ Planning meals

๐ Preparing food

๐ Eating throughout the day

๐ Making frequent food choices

However, skipping meals may reduce concentration or energy in other people. The effect depends on the individual’s health, work demands, sleep, and usual eating habits.

Possible Effects on Brain Function

Intermittent fasting may influence metabolic pathways related to brain health. Some people report improved alertness or concentration once they become accustomed to fasting.

However, fasting may also cause:

๐ Headaches

๐ Irritability

๐ Dizziness

๐ Difficulty concentrating

๐ Fatigue

There is not enough evidence to claim that intermittent fasting directly restores memory or treats neurological disease.

May Influence Inflammation

Weight loss and improved metabolic health may help reduce some inflammatory markers.

Nevertheless, intermittent fasting has not been proven to make injuries or illnesses heal twice as quickly. Recovery depends on many factors, including the underlying condition, nutrition, sleep, medication, and medical treatment.

Intermittent Fasting and Cancer

Intermittent fasting is being studied for its possible effects on cancer prevention and cancer treatment. Laboratory and animal studies suggest that fasting may influence pathways related to cell growth, insulin, inflammation, and treatment response.

However, current evidence does not prove that intermittent fasting:

๐ Prevents cancer

๐ Stops cancer from spreading

๐ Cures cancer

๐ Replaces chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, or other established treatments

Prolonged fasting for 48 hours or longer may be dangerous for cancer patients because it can contribute to:

๐ Malnutrition

๐ Muscle loss

๐ Weakness

๐ Dehydration

๐ Low blood sugar

๐ Reduced tolerance to treatment

๐ Delayed recovery

Cancer patients should discuss any fasting plan with their oncologist and a qualified dietitian before making changes to their diet. Fasting should never be used as a replacement for prescribed cancer treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Intermittent fasting may cause:

๐ Hunger

๐ Headaches

๐ Dizziness

๐ Irritability

๐ Tiredness

๐ Reduced concentration

๐ Constipation

๐ Acid reflux

๐ Overeating during the feeding period

๐ Menstrual changes in some individuals

๐ Nutritional deficiencies if food intake is too restricted

Symptoms may be more severe when fasting periods are long or fluid and nutrient intake is inadequate.

Who Should Avoid Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting may not be appropriate for:

๐ Children and adolescents

๐ Pregnant or breastfeeding women

๐ People who are underweight

๐ People with a current or previous eating disorder

๐ People with malnutrition

๐ Older adults with frailty or significant muscle loss

๐ People with diabetes taking insulin or certain medications

๐ People with chronic kidney or liver disease

๐ People receiving cancer treatment

๐ People taking medication that must be consumed with food

๐ Anyone with a medical condition that may be worsened by prolonged fasting

Medical advice should be obtained before beginning IF when an underlying health condition is present.

How to Practise Intermittent Fasting More Safely

Beginners may start with a shorter fasting period, such as 12 hours overnight, before gradually increasing the duration.

During the eating window:

๐ Eat sufficient protein.

๐ Choose vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats.

๐ Avoid compensating with very large meals.

๐ Limit highly processed food, sugary drinks, and excessive fried food.

๐ Drink enough water.

๐ Continue regular physical activity.

๐ Stop fasting if severe dizziness, weakness, fainting, confusion, or persistent illness occurs.

Water is generally suitable during fasting. Unsweetened tea or black coffee may also be acceptable for some people, although caffeine may worsen anxiety, heartburn, or sleep problems.

Summary

Intermittent fasting may support weight management, insulin sensitivity, and certain metabolic health markers when used appropriately. It may also simplify meal routines for some individuals.

However, it is not a shortcut that automatically increases muscle, reverses ageing, eliminates inflammation, or prevents cancer. The benefits depend on the quality of the diet, total calorie intake, physical activity, sleep, and individual health.

A sustainable eating pattern that provides adequate nutrition is more important than following the longest possible fasting period.
