Nasopharyngeal Cancer Cases Have Increased by 104%

The incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has reportedly increased by 104% among people aged 15-39 years. This rise may result from several contributing factors, including the following:
1. Increased Epstein-Barr Virus Infection
๐ Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a major risk factor for NPC. The virus may trigger abnormal changes in the cells lining the nasopharynx, which can eventually develop into cancer.
๐ Factors associated with increased EBV infection among adolescents and young adults may include lifestyle behaviours such as sharing eating utensils. Infection may also occur during childhood and contribute to health problems later in life.
2. Air Pollution and Carcinogenic Substances
๐ PM2.5 air pollution and airborne toxins, including hydrocarbons from cigarette smoke and vehicle exhaust, may contribute to cellular changes in the nasal and nasopharyngeal areas.
๐ Nitrosamines found in certain preserved and fermented foods, such as fermented fish and preserved eggs, have been associated with NPC, particularly in Southeast Asia and southern China.
3. Changes in Lifestyle and Behaviour
๐ Smoking and drinking alcohol from a young age may increase the risk of NPC.
๐ Greater consumption of processed foods and products containing high levels of preservatives may also contribute to increased risk.
4. Genetic and Immune Factors
๐ People with a family history of NPC may have a higher risk of developing the disease.
๐ A weakened immune system resulting from chronic stress or long-term illness may allow EBV to remain active and contribute to abnormal cellular changes.
