The Risks of Advanced Maternal Age Pregnancy

When a woman becomes 30 years old, we realize that they can still do various activities like when teenagers do. If we talk about having babies, It is more difficult to pregnant for women between 20-30 years old. And pregnancies have an increased risk for certain complications when the birth parent is 35 or older. Let’s read these article then you will understand why women need a plan to have babies.


How old is considered advanced maternal age?

Advanced maternal age refers to women who are pregnant at age 35 or older. Pregnancy after 35 is more likely to have medical risks compared to pregnancy in younger ages. It is risky to both the mothers and the unborn babies.

Ideal age to get pregnant

The best age to have a baby is between the ages of 20 – 29. After 30, women’s fertility starts dropping. After 35, it declines more significantly.

What are the risks of advanced maternal age pregnancy?

1. Risk of miscarriage

The older woman are the higher risk of miscarriage .The chances of miscarriage in a  woman who pregnant at the age of 40 are 20-25%, and the miscarriage is usually occur before 12 weeks of gestation. This is mainly due to decreased of egg and embryo quality

2. Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. Women aged 35 and over have an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. At age 40, we found a 7% chance of having an ectopic pregnancy, compared to women who are under 35 years old, there is only a 1.5-2% chance of having an ectopic pregnancy.

3. Risk of complication; diabetes or hypertension

4. Risk of having a baby with Down syndrome

When woman become over 35 years old, there is a 1 in 350 chance of having Down’s syndrome baby, it may be from an abnormality of egg cell division leads to an embryo chromosomal abnormalities.

5. The baby is underweight and having a risk of premature birth 

Plan to reduce the risks

Although advanced maternal age pregnancy has more risk, advanced medical technology can help to get pregnant at the age of 35 is not scary as you think. Just have a plan ready to reduce the risks by consultation with specialist doctors.
