The Story Behind Floral Tea

Normally, humans have long recognized and utilized flowers for a variety of purposes, such as in medicine preparation and the creation of fragrances. The earliest historical records related to the use of flower extracts date back to Persia during the Sasanian Empire (224–651 CE)
During that period, people discovered the benefits of what is often called the “queen of all flowers” — the rose. One popular method was boiling rose petals in water, which produced a fragrant rose tea that later became widely appreciated and spread across Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia
In China during that period, tea merchants had already discovered the use of jasmine flowers to scent and blend with green tea as early as the Song Dynasty (AD 960–1279). During this era, tea and herbal infusions made from chrysanthemum flowers also became increasingly popular. The pale yellow chrysanthemum blossoms have a light and pleasant fragrance. In addition to their medicinal properties, they are also known for their delicate, naturally sweet flavor.
Chrysanthemum tea later spread to Japan around the 5th century and eventually to Korea, where it continued to gain popularity alongside other floral herbs such as peach blossoms and plum blossoms.
Two other flowers commonly found in herbal teas are chamomile and lavender, both of which have long been believed to possess calming properties and promote restful sleep. Like rose petals, lavender and chamomile have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Ancient physicians, such as Dioscorides, prescribed these herbs to treat a variety of ailments, ranging from indigestion to headaches.
Preparing these flowers for consumption by steeping them in boiling water was a common practice. They were often combined with herbs such as mint, sage, and rosemary to create herbal infusions that were both aromatic and flavorful.
