Zombie Cells: The Silent Enemy Driving the Body Towards Chronic Disease

Zombie cells are damaged or ageing cells that no longer function normally but fail to die through the body’s natural processes. Instead, they remain in the body and continuously release inflammatory substances that silently damage nearby healthy cells.
Over time, their accumulation may contribute to chronic diseases throughout the body, including:
๐ Alzheimer’s disease
๐ Osteoarthritis
๐ Cardiovascular disease
๐ Metabolic disorders
๐ Cancer
At Manut Tang Wai Fest 2026, Dr Olan Piamkulvanich, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of WinCell Research Co., Ltd., shared insights about zombie cells during the Main Stage session titled “Zombie Cells: The Silent Enemy Driving the Body Towards Chronic Disease.”
The session encouraged participants to understand physical deterioration by examining its origins at the cellular level.
Dr Olan explained that zombie cells can be beneficial when present in normal amounts. They send signals that attract immune cells to remove damaged cells and may also help protect the body against cancer.
Problems arise when zombie cells accumulate in excessive numbers and remain in the body for too long, leading to chronic inflammation.
Ageing is not the only factor that accelerates their accumulation. Lifestyle also plays an important role, including:
๐ Chronic stress
๐ Insufficient sleep
๐ Prolonged sitting and physical inactivity
๐ Free radicals from food and environmental exposure
The good news is that we can take steps to support the body’s natural ability to remove these cells.
Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and stress reduction may help improve the function of natural killer cells, or NK cells. These immune cells are responsible for naturally identifying and removing abnormal or damaged cells, including zombie cells.
Dr Olan also referred to research from Japan suggesting that forest bathing, known as Shinrin-Yoku, may improve NK-cell activity by approximately 50%.
The medical field is currently developing immune senescence or zombie-cell testing to assess the accumulation of senescent cells within the body. Such innovations may allow people to manage their health more precisely at the cellular level.
Long-term health begins with understanding and caring for the body at its source-the cellular level.
