Health Warning: Sweet Milk Tea Linked to Increased Risk of Kidney Stones

The Department of Health, under the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand has issued a warning to avid sweet milk tea drinkers, highlighting the potential health risks associated with this popular beverage. Regular consumption of sweet milk tea may not only contribute to weight gain but also increase the risk of developing kidney stones.

Kidney Stones: A Painful Reality 

Kidney stones form when minerals in the urine crystallize into hard lumps, causing severe abdominal pain and potentially obstructing the urinary tract. Key substances in sweet milk tea that can contribute to the formation of kidney stones include: 

- Fructose: The high fructose content in sweet milk tea is quickly absorbed, putting additional strain on the kidneys and raising the risk of stone formation. 

- Calcium: Milk used in the tea can be high in calcium. Excess calcium that is not absorbed by the body can be excreted in the urine, where it may crystallize and form stones. 

- Oxalate: Found in tea leaves, oxalate can combine with calcium to create calcium oxalate stones, one of the most common types of kidney stones. 

Tips to Reduce the Risk 

To enjoy sweet milk tea while minimizing the risk of kidney stones, the Department of Health recommends the following: 

- Reduce Sugar: Opt for less sugar or no sugar in your milk tea to lower fructose intake. 

- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to dilute urine and decrease the likelihood of mineral crystallization. 

- Choose Low-Fat Milk: Consider using skim milk or soy milk to reduce calcium consumption. 

- Incorporate Potassium-Rich Foods: Include more vegetables and fruits high in potassium, such as bananas and tomatoes, in your diet to help lower the risk of stone formation. 

Moderation is Key 

While drinking sweet milk tea can be part of your routine, moderation is essential. By choosing a low-sugar version, drinking enough water, and making healthier milk choices, you can reduce the risk of kidney stones and promote overall good health.
