At SAFE Fertility Group, we provide Embryo Transfer as an essential and final step of the in vitro fertilization process. This procedure involves placing a selected embryo into the uterus with the goal of helping the embryo implant and establish a pregnancy.
Embryo transfer is usually a simple and minimally invasive procedure. However, careful planning, accurate timing, embryo quality, and preparation of the uterine lining are important factors that may influence the chance of success.
Embryo Transfer is the process of placing an embryo into the uterus after fertilization has occurred in the laboratory as part of IVF or ICSI treatment.
Once eggs and sperm have been fertilized and the embryo has developed to the appropriate stage, the fertility specialist transfers the selected embryo into the uterine cavity. The goal is for the embryo to attach to the uterine lining and continue developing into a pregnancy.
Embryo transfer may be performed using either a fresh embryo or a frozen-thawed embryo, depending on the patient’s condition, embryo development, hormone levels, uterine lining, and treatment plan recommended by the doctor.
There are two main types of embryo transfer:
1. Fresh Embryo Transfer
2. Frozen Embryo Transfer, also known as Frozen-Thawed Embryo Transfer or FET
The fertility specialist will recommend the most suitable approach based on each patient’s medical condition, ovarian response, embryo quality, and uterine readiness.
A Fresh Embryo Transfer is performed within the same IVF or ICSI treatment cycle after egg retrieval and fertilization.
After the embryo has developed in the laboratory for the appropriate number of days, it is transferred into the uterus without being frozen.
Fresh embryo transfer may be suitable for:
๐ Women who produce a small number of eggs
๐ Patients who do not require embryo chromosome testing
๐ Patients with suitable hormone levels after ovarian stimulation
๐ Patients with a healthy and receptive uterine lining during the same cycle
๐ Patients with low risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
Fresh embryo transfer may be considered when the doctor determines that the body is ready for implantation and the uterine environment is suitable.
A Frozen Embryo Transfer, or FET, is a procedure in which embryos that were previously frozen are thawed and transferred into the uterus in a later cycle.
Frozen embryo transfer may be recommended when the doctor wants to optimize the uterine environment before transfer or when embryo chromosome testing is planned.
Frozen embryo transfer may be suitable for:
๐ Women who produce a large number of eggs after ovarian stimulation
๐ Patients with high hormone levels after stimulation
๐ Patients at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
๐ Patients whose uterine lining is not ideal during the stimulation cycle
๐ Patients who need embryo chromosome testing before transfer
๐ Patients who wish to store embryos for future pregnancy attempts
๐ Patients whose doctor recommends delaying embryo transfer for medical reasons
In some cases, ovarian stimulation may increase hormone levels and affect the uterine lining. Therefore, freezing the embryos and transferring them in a later cycle may allow the doctor to prepare the uterus more carefully.
Before a frozen embryo transfer, the uterine lining must be prepared to support embryo implantation. There are two main methods of uterine preparation:
1. Natural Frozen-Thawed Embryo Transfer
2. Artificial or Medicated Embryo Transfer
The doctor will choose the most suitable method on a case-by-case basis.
In a Natural Frozen-Thawed Embryo Transfer cycle, the preparation of the uterine lining depends mainly on the woman’s natural menstrual cycle.
During a normal cycle, estrogen is produced by the developing follicle. This estrogen helps thicken and mature the uterine lining, preparing it for embryo implantation.
In this approach, no artificial hormone is usually given. The doctor monitors the patient’s natural cycle using:
๐ Transvaginal ultrasound
๐ Blood tests to check hormone levels
๐ Assessment of uterine lining thickness
๐ Ovulation timing
These results help determine the best date for embryo transfer.
Natural frozen embryo transfer may be suitable for women who have regular ovulation and a predictable menstrual cycle.
In an Artificial or Medicated Embryo Transfer cycle, estrogen and other hormone medications may be given to prepare the uterine lining.
The patient will visit the clinic periodically for monitoring. The doctor will check the thickness and condition of the uterine lining using ultrasound and may adjust the medication dosage or duration if the lining does not develop as expected.
This method allows the medical team to control the timing of the transfer more precisely and may be suitable for patients with irregular cycles, ovulation problems, or specific medical conditions.
There is no single method that is best for every patient. Pregnancy outcomes may be comparable between natural and medicated uterine preparation when properly selected. The fertility specialist will recommend the approach that best matches each patient’s condition.
The success of embryo transfer depends on several important factors, including:
๐ Age of the patient
๐ Embryo quality
๐ Chromosomal status of the embryo
๐ Thickness and receptivity of the uterine lining
๐ Hormone balance
๐ Previous fertility history
๐ Underlying medical conditions
๐ Fresh or frozen transfer plan
๐ Laboratory quality and embryo handling standards
In recent years, success rates with Frozen Embryo Transfer have improved significantly. FET has become an increasingly popular option for many patients before considering another fresh IVF cycle.
At SAFE Fertility Group, the medical team carefully evaluates each patient and embryo to recommend the most appropriate embryo transfer plan.
Embryo transfer is usually a short and simple procedure performed in a sterile procedure room.
The patient will be asked to lie on an examination bed in a similar position to a pelvic examination. A speculum is gently placed to allow the doctor to see the cervix.
The selected embryo is loaded into a thin catheter. The fertility specialist then carefully passes the catheter through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity.
At the same time, abdominal ultrasound is used to guide the catheter and help confirm the correct position inside the uterus. Once the catheter reaches the ideal location, the embryo is gently released into the uterine cavity.
During the procedure, the patient may be able to view the process through the ultrasound screen.
The procedure is generally quick and usually does not require anesthesia.
After embryo transfer, the patient may be advised to rest at the clinic for a period of time before going home. At SAFE Fertility Group, patients may be asked to lie on their back for approximately 2 hours after the procedure.
Most patients can return to light daily activities afterward, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.
Around 7 days after embryo transfer, a blood test may be performed to check whether pregnancy has occurred.
The medical team will provide clear instructions regarding medication, activity, follow-up appointments, and pregnancy testing.
SAFE Fertility Group provides embryo transfer with careful planning, advanced laboratory support, and personalized fertility care.
Our doctors carefully evaluate each patient’s condition and recommend the most suitable embryo
transfer timing and method.
Embryo handling, culture, freezing, thawing, and preparation are performed by trained embryologists under strict laboratory standards.
Each embryo transfer plan is customized based on embryo quality, uterine lining condition, hormone
levels, and patient history.
Embryo transfer is performed with ultrasound guidance to support accurate embryo placement in the uterine cavity.
SAFE offers both fresh embryo transfer and frozen embryo transfer, allowing treatment plans to be adapted to the patient’s individual needs.
Our team provides guidance before, during, and after embryo transfer to help patients feel informed, comfortable, and supported throughout the process.
Embryo transfer is a meaningful step in fertility treatment and requires careful coordination between the doctor, embryology laboratory, and patient care team.
At SAFE Fertility Group, our specialists are ready to provide personalized consultation, advanced embryo care, and professional support to help you move closer to your goal of pregnancy.
