Department of Sports Injury Treatment

Complete service information and details

Description

Sports and exercise offer significant health benefits, but they also carry a risk of injury. Sports injuries may occur due to accidents, overuse, or improper techniques. These injuries can be acute or chronic. With proper treatment and appropriate prevention, recovery can be faster and the risk of recurrence can be significantly reduced.

The following information on sports-related pain and treatment is provided by Dr. Nataya Udomsak.

Types of Sports Injuries

Sports injuries can be broadly classified into two main categories:

1. Acute Injuries

These occur suddenly as a result of trauma or impact, such as:

- Ankle sprain – Caused by stretching or tearing of the ligaments around the ankle

- Muscle strain – Results from excessive force beyond the muscle’s capacity

- Fracture – A crack or break in the bone due to impact

- Dislocation – A joint is forced out of its normal position

- Ligament tears, such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears – Common in sports involving twisting or jumping movements

2. Chronic Injuries

These develop gradually from repetitive use over a long period, such as:

- Tendinitis – For example, tennis elbow in sports requiring repetitive arm use
(Read more: Treatment of shoulder tendinitis or rotator cuff tear)

- Shin splints – Common in long-distance runners

- Joint pain from degeneration (Osteoarthritis) – Caused by wear and tear of joints

- Bursitis – Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs in joints subjected to frequent friction

Treatment Approaches for Sports Injuries

1. Initial First Aid (RICE Principle)

For acute injuries, the RICE method helps reduce pain and swelling:

- Rest – Avoid using the injured area

- Ice – Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours

- Compression – Use an elastic bandage to reduce swelling

- Elevation – Elevate the injured area above heart level

2. Medication and Medical Treatment

- Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling

- Physical therapy to restore muscle strength and joint function

- Steroid or PRP injections for chronic or persistent conditions

- Surgery for severe cases, such as fractures requiring realignment or ligament tears
(Read more: Treatment of shoulder tendinitis or rotator cuff tear)

3. Rehabilitation and Return to Exercise

- Begin with light exercises, such as stretching and guided physical therapy

- Strengthen muscles surrounding the affected joints

- Modify and improve sports techniques to prevent re-injury

Prevention of Sports Injuries

- Warm up and cool down before and after exercise to reduce muscle tension

- Use proper techniques during sports and exercise

- Choose appropriate equipment, such as shock-absorbing athletic shoes

- Build muscle strength through regular strength training

- Ensure adequate rest and avoid overtraining

Summary

Sports injuries can happen to anyone. Proper treatment and effective prevention are key to faster recovery and reducing the risk of chronic complications. If symptoms are severe or persistent, consultation with a specialist physician is recommended to ensure safe and appropriate care.
