Diarrhea and fatigue like this, could it be "Norovirus"?

Diarrhea and fatigue like this, could it be "Norovirus"?

Have you ever experienced this? Suddenly having stomach pain, watery diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting until you feel weak. These symptoms may be signs of “Norovirus” a virus that spreads easily and causes acute gastroenteritis. This illness can occur at any age, especially in young children and the elderly who have weaker immune systems than the general population.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a common virus and the main cause of infections in the gastrointestinal tract or acute gastroenteritis. It spreads easily and rapidly, especially in places where many people gather, such as schools, daycare centers, or workplaces.

Norovirus can be easily transmitted through

๐  Eating contaminated food or water

๐  Touching surfaces with the virus and then touching the mouth

Importantly, Norovirus can survive for a long time even in clean environments if not properly cleaned.

Symptoms indicating possible Norovirus infection

Norovirus symptoms usually appear quickly within 12-48 hours after exposure. Common symptoms include

๐  Acute diarrhea with multiple loose stools

๐  Nausea and vomiting; some may experience severe vomiting

๐  Fatigue and weakness; some may feel completely drained of energy

๐  Low - grade fever or sometimes no fever

Which age groups are at risk?

Young children and the elderly are at higher risk of Norovirus infection because young children have underdeveloped immune systems. Additionally, behaviors such as putting objects in their mouths or sharing toys with other children increase the chance of infection. Elderly people have weakened immunity due to aging, making it harder for their bodies to fight the virus. Those with chronic diseases at this age, such as diabetes or kidney disease, may recover more slowly and are at risk of complications like dehydration if infected with Norovirus.

How to care for Norovirus infection?

Currently, there is no specific antiviral medication for Norovirus. Treatment is supportive to help patients recover as quickly as possible.

๐  Drink oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or electrolyte drinks to replace fluids and electrolytes lost from diarrhea

๐  Eat soft foods such as rice porridge, congee, or broth that do not trigger nausea

๐  Get enough rest to help the body fight the virus

๐  See a doctor immediately if symptoms are severe such as vomiting that prevents drinking fluids or signs of dehydration like dry mouth or reduced urination

Simple ways to prevent Norovirus start with you

๐  Wash your hands frequently with water and soap, especially before eating and after using the restroom

๐  Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, TV remotes, and children’s toys with effective disinfectants

๐  Avoid raw or undercooked foods such as fresh seafood, fermented foods, and foods that are not fully cooked

Whether it’s your little one, parents, or elderly family members, our medical team is ready to provide close consultation and care with proper diagnosis and treatment. Don’t let the risk become a problem if you or your family members have suspicious symptoms related to Norovirus. You can get tested and consult specialists at Phyathai Nawamin Hospital.
