Four Workplace Habits That Can Seriously Harm Your Spine

Many office workers unknowingly repeat habits that place unnecessary strain on the spine, spinal discs, muscles, and joints. Over time, poor posture and repetitive movements may contribute to neck pain, back pain, muscle tension, and reduced mobility.
1. Sitting on the Edge of the Chair
Sitting without fully supporting the hips and back against the chair reduces the body’s base of support. The back and abdominal muscles must work harder to maintain balance, increasing strain on the lower back.
Repeating this posture for long periods may lead to:
๐ Lower-back fatigue
๐ Tight back and hip muscles
๐ Poor sitting posture
๐ Increased pressure on the spinal discs
๐ Persistent back discomfort
A better sitting position is to place the hips fully on the seat, support the lower back with the backrest, and keep both feet flat on the floor.
Muscle tension from prolonged sitting, stress, or poor posture may also contribute to tension-type headaches. These headaches often feel like pressure or tightness around the head, temples, eye sockets, or back of the neck and may become more noticeable during the afternoon or evening.
2. Slouching or Sitting with a Rounded Back
Slouching may initially feel comfortable, but it places the spine in an unnatural position and forces the neck, shoulders, and back muscles to remain tense for long periods.
This posture may cause:
๐ Neck and shoulder pain
๐ Upper- and lower-back discomfort
๐ Muscle stiffness
๐ Headaches associated with neck tension
๐ Increased pressure on the spinal discs
๐ Gradual changes in posture
The discomfort is mainly caused by prolonged muscle loading, reduced movement, and increased stress on the joints and soft tissues-not simply by lactic acid accumulation.
Keep the head aligned over the shoulders, relax the shoulders, and avoid leaning towards the computer screen. The screen should be positioned approximately at eye level.
3. Carrying Heavy Bags with the Fingers
Carrying several heavy shopping bags using only the fingers places significant pressure on the finger joints, tendons, wrists, and forearms.
Possible problems include:
๐ Finger and wrist pain
๐ Tendon irritation
๐ Numbness or tingling
๐ Trigger finger symptoms
๐ Tightness in the forearms and shoulders
๐ Neck and upper-back strain from carrying an uneven load
Repeated pressure and friction around the tendons may cause inflammation or thickening of the surrounding tissues. However, scar tissue in the fingers does not directly spread to the neck.
To reduce strain:
๐ Divide the weight between both hands.
๐ Use bags with wider handles.
๐ Carry heavier objects close to the body.
๐ Use a backpack or trolley when carrying several items.
๐ Avoid carrying heavy bags for extended periods.
4. Wearing High-Heeled Shoes for Long Periods
High heels change the position of the feet, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine. To maintain balance, the body may shift forwards while the lower back curves more than usual.
Prolonged use may contribute to:
๐ Lower-back pain
๐ Tight calf muscles
๐ Foot and ankle pain
๐ Reduced balance
๐ Increased pressure on the forefoot
๐ Changes in walking posture
Wearing high heels occasionally may not cause significant problems for everyone, but long periods of standing or walking in very high heels can increase musculoskeletal strain.
Consider choosing lower, wider heels, alternating with supportive footwear, and avoiding high heels on days that require prolonged standing or walking.
Protecting Your Spine at Work
Healthy workplace habits include:
๐ Adjusting the chair so the lower back is properly supported
๐ Keeping both feet flat on the floor or on a footrest
๐ Positioning the keyboard and mouse close to the body
๐ Keeping the monitor at a comfortable eye level
๐ Changing position and standing up regularly
๐ Stretching the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and legs
๐ Avoiding prolonged sitting without a break
Persistent pain, numbness, muscle weakness, pain radiating into an arm or leg, or difficulty controlling the bladder or bowel should be assessed promptly by a healthcare professional.

Plank Exercises: More Than Abdominal Training
Plank exercises are commonly used to strengthen the abdominal muscles, but their benefits extend beyond improving the appearance of the waistline. When performed correctly, planks strengthen the core muscles that support the spine and may help improve posture, balance, and spinal stability.
