Thai teen rocker Nene Royal’s viral America’s Got Talent success is drawing global attention, with Bloomberg highlighting her potential to boost Thailand tourism, soft power and youth interest in music.
Rattikan Amlai, better known as “Nene Royal,” a 16 year-old musician from Phuket, has emerged as one of Thailand’s newest international sensations following her performance of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” on America’s Got Talent (AGT) 2026. Her powerful vocals and electrifying guitar solo quickly went viral, with videos across official platforms generating more than 200 million views surpassing those of other contestants.
On August 25, 2026, corresponding to the morning of August 26 in Thailand, Nene was scheduled to take the stage in the America’s Got Talent Live Show Quarterfinals on NBC in the United States, where advancement in the competition would be determined by public voting.
Although fans in Thailand are unable to vote because AGT voting is restricted to viewers in the United States and Puerto Rico, support for the young Thai performer has continued to grow at home and abroad.
Thai food conglomerate CPF demonstrated its support by securing a large digital billboard in New York’s Times Square, displaying Nene’s image alongside messages of encouragement from Thai fans.
Opal Suchata Chuangsri, Miss World 2025 and a fellow Phuket native, also sent her encouragement to Nene, urging the young musician to “show the world what you can do.”
Nene’s rapidly expanding international profile has also attracted attention from the Thai government, with hopes that her growing global recognition could contribute to promoting Thailand as a tourism destination.
In July, the Thai government instructed relevant tourism authorities to explore opportunities to support and promote the young musician. Nene was also welcomed at Government House, where she joined a performance of “Som San,” a well-known Thai rock song by Sek Loso.
Discussions have also reportedly taken place about potentially involving Nene in the Amazing Thailand tourism campaign.
Global financial media outlet Bloomberg has highlighted Nene’s growing popularity as a potential new source of momentum for Thailand’s tourism industry, particularly as the country seeks new ways to capture international attention and attract younger generations of travelers.

Entertainment and popular culture have increasingly become powerful tools for shaping perceptions of Thailand among international audiences.
HBO’s The White Lotus Season 3, filmed in Thailand, showcased the country’s luxury resorts, tropical landscapes and destinations to viewers around the world, generating renewed interest in traveling to locations featured in the series.
Thailand’s rapidly expanding Boys’ Love, or BL, entertainment industry has similarly demonstrated the economic potential of fandom-driven tourism.
Thai series and their stars have developed international fan communities spanning markets from China to New York and Sydney. This has created what is increasingly described as a Fandom Economy, generating economic activity through fan meetings, concerts, official merchandise and travel to filming locations.
Nene, however, represents a different dimension of Thailand’s emerging cultural influence.
Her identity as a teenage girl performing hard-driving rock music presents a contemporary and unexpected image of Thailand that extends beyond the country’s traditional international associations with beaches, cuisine and cultural heritage.
Bloomberg’s coverage of Nene illustrates how her popularity has moved beyond Thailand’s domestic fan base and entered the international mainstream.
Her rise also comes at an important moment for Thailand’s tourism industry, one of the country’s largest economic engines.
Thailand welcomed approximately 20 million international visitors in 2026 through August 22, around 3% fewer than during the same period a year earlier. Annual international arrivals have also yet to return to the record level of nearly 40 million visitors recorded in 2019.
Against this backdrop, Nene’s youthful, energetic and contemporary image is being viewed as another potential source of soft power capable of introducing Thailand to new international audiences.
Rather than promoting a destination through conventional tourism advertising alone, the global visibility of Thai artists, athletes and entertainers can generate organic interest in the country through music, entertainment and popular culture.
Nene’s influence is already being felt beyond tourism and entertainment.
A Bangkok musical instrument store owner told Bloomberg that interest in guitars had increased noticeably since Nene became an online sensation. The store reportedly sold two electric guitars to school students within two weeks — a notable increase compared with its previous pace of roughly one sale per month.
A 17-year-old high school student also told Bloomberg that she had tried playing an electric guitar for the first time after seeing Nene on social media.
“If Nene can do it, I want to try too,” she said.
Thailand’s music education sector has also reportedly seen increasing interest among young people, with more inquiries about music lessons following Nene’s rise to prominence.
The phenomenon echoes the influence that internationally recognized figures with connections to Thailand have had on younger generations in the past, including Lisa of BLACKPINK, former world-class tennis player Paradorn Srichaphan, and legendary golfer Tiger Woods, whose mother is Thai.
For Nene, performing during prime time on one of America’s biggest television talent competitions represents a remarkable journey from her beginnings in Phuket.
Before attracting a global audience, she developed her performance skills by busking at Naka Weekend Market in Phuket, gaining experience performing live in front of local audiences.
Today, at just 16 years old, she has taken her rock vocals and electric guitar onto an international stage watched by millions.
Her journey represents more than the emergence of another young musical talent. It also illustrates how digital platforms, global entertainment and social media can rapidly transform a local performer into an international cultural figure.
As Nene continues her journey on America’s Got Talent, her growing visibility could open new possibilities not only for her own music career but also for Thailand’s image among younger audiences worldwide presenting a more contemporary, creative and dynamic side of the country to the global community.
