Kinshasa – Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported that confirmed Ebola cases have risen to 689, including 139 deaths, as the country continues to respond to an outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
On June 11, authorities confirmed 17 new cases and 5 additional deaths, all reported in Ituri Province in eastern DR Congo.
The outbreak has now affected 29 health areas across three eastern provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Authorities also reported 168 suspected cases, including 64 suspected deaths.
The response continues to face several challenges, including limited cooperation in collecting samples from deceased patients, insufficient capacity at Ebola treatment centers, shortages of infection prevention and control supplies in North Kivu, weak alert reporting across affected provinces, and a funding gap of US$21.5 million.
A report from the UN Refugee Agency also noted that two Ebola-related deaths were detected in an internally displaced persons camp in Ituri Province.
DR Congo declared the current Ebola outbreak on May 15, marking the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was first identified in 1976.
