According to health statistics from the Ministry of Public Health, the number of people in Thailand with diabetes has been steadily increasing. In 2023, there were 300,000 new cases annually. Diabetes is a silent threat that can catch you off guard.

Many men may experience issues such as erectile dysfunction, often referred to as "nokkheao mai khan" (which means "not having an erection"), fatigue, loss of libido, or other symptoms, which may actually be caused by diabetes. To understand this better, we consult Dr. Wiwat Rodprasert, a specialist in endocrinology and metabolism who has a Ph.D. in Men's Health from Finland.

Checklist for Low Testosterone Symptoms

Low testosterone can manifest through various symptoms. Here’s a checklist to help you identify potential issues:

     1.Decreased sexual desire

     2.Erectile dysfunction

     3.Fatigue and weakness

     4.Unexplained weight gain

     5.Osteoporosis

     6.Hot flashes

     7.Insomnia

     8.Stress and depression

     9.Reduced self-confidence

     10.Poor concentration and memory

If you experience any of these symptoms, you might have low testosterone levels. Consulting with a specialist and getting a testosterone test from your blood is advisable.

Factors Leading to Low Testosterone

Several factors can contribute to low testosterone, including:

1.Aging: Men over 40 experience a gradual decrease in testosterone levels, with increased risk as they age.

2.Other health conditions: Diseases affecting hormone production, such as pituitary gland disorders or severe trauma to the testicles.

3.Drug use: Abuse of steroids or self-administered testosterone without medical supervision.

     4.Obesity

     5.Radiation or chemotherapy

Diabetes and Low Testosterone

Many people may not realize that diabetes can also lower testosterone levels. Diabetic men are twice as likely to have low testosterone compared to non-diabetics, particularly if they are also overweight. This is due to reduced brain function controlling testicular hormone production. Diabetic patients with these symptoms should inform their endocrinologist to check for low testosterone levels.

Preventing Low Testosterone

To prevent low testosterone, consider the following:

1.Manage your weight: Studies show that weight loss through diet and exercise can increase testosterone levels.

2.Control chronic conditions: Maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol to avoid complications that can           lower testosterone.

3.Avoid substance abuse: Steer clear of drugs, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

     4.Get adequate rest.

     5.Eat a healthy diet.

     6.Exercise regularly.

     7.Manage stress.

If you suspect you have low testosterone, consult a doctor promptly. Tests typically require fasting after midnight. If low testosterone is detected, treatment will be provided. At Phyathai 2 Hospital, we have a team of specialists who can accurately diagnose and treat these conditions.
