September 20 is Thailand's National Youth Day. The FDA emphasizes that youth should take pride in themselves and express themselves creatively. For example, with diverse skin colors, one should be confident in their own skin color and not seek products or methods to make their skin whiter. Instead, focus on maintaining healthy skin through safe practices. Choose products from reputable sources, with Thai labels and registration numbers, and avoid believing exaggerated advertisements or reviews.
Dr. Veerachai Nalwattana, Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stated that September 20 of each year is National Youth Day in Thailand, a significant day for youth to reflect on their roles in personal development, community, and society as part of a strong foundation for the future. This includes being confident and expressing themselves creatively. However, there is still a concern that some youth place excessive importance on skin color, leading to the use of products or methods to whiten skin, which can be dangerous and harmful to health, as often reported in the news. The FDA supports youth in being proud of their skin color and focusing on keeping their skin healthy rather than using harmful whitening substances like skin-whitening powders, skin color-changing creams, and illegal products not approved by the FDA. The use of such products can be harmful, causing irritation, redness, burning, and in severe cases, skin burns, scarring, or chronic skin diseases. Additionally, chemicals in these products can penetrate the body and affect internal organs.
The Deputy Secretary-General further noted that today's society has diverse beauty standards based on race and skin color, with acceptance of individual differences. True beauty is self-confidence. Youth should take pride in their unique skin color and maintain healthy skin by using skincare products, sun protection, drinking enough water, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting adequate rest. Importantly, choose skincare products from reputable sources with clear Thai labels and registration numbers. Do not believe exaggerated advertisements or reviews claiming to whiten skin or remove blemishes in a short period. Registration numbers can be verified on the FDA website www.fda.moph.go.th or via Line: @FDAThai. If you suspect illegal cosmetics or advertisements, report them to the FDA hotline 1556 or via Line: @FDAThai, Facebook: FDA Thai, or email 1556@fda.moph.go.th, or send mail to P.O. Box 1556, Ministry of Public Health, Nonthaburi 11004, or contact public health offices nationwide.
