Bangkok, Thailand The Institute of Dermatology Thailand under the Department of Medical Services Thailand has issued a public advisory on the use of dermal fillers in female intimate areas, urging individuals to seek proper medical consultation and rely on accurate information before undergoing such procedures.
According to health officials, aesthetic and regenerative procedures in women’s health have gained increasing popularity in recent years. This includes the use of dermal fillers in the female genital area for purposes such as cosmetic enhancement, tissue rejuvenation, and, in some cases, improving quality of life.
However, medical experts emphasize that the genital region is anatomically complex and highly sensitive, containing a dense network of blood vessels and nerves. Procedures performed without proper expertise may lead to serious complications, including vascular occlusion, infection, and tissue ischemia, which in severe cases can pose significant health risks.
Akarathan Jitnuyanont, M.D. Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, stressed that such procedures require specialized knowledge and precision. “If performed incorrectly, complications can occur, ranging from infection to impaired blood supply in tissues,” he said.
Dr. Weerawat Ukranun, Director of the Institute of Dermatology, highlighted the importance of pre-treatment assessment and consultation with qualified specialists. He noted that decisions regarding aesthetic procedures should be based on a clear understanding of benefits, risks, and individualized medical advice to ensure both safety and optimal outcomes.
He also pointed out that alternative treatments are available in certain cases, including energy-based medical technologies and treatments that address underlying causes, which may be safer and more appropriate for some patients.
Dr. Sasathorn Singthong, a medical specialist at the Institute of Dermatology, explained that filler injections in the female genital area are generally categorized into two primary sites. The first is the labia majora, where fillers are used to restore volume or address age-related tissue atrophy. The second is the vaginal area, where fillers may be indicated in specific cases, such as vaginal dryness.
She cautioned that fillers are not recommended for vaginal tightening purposes and should not be administered in large quantities, as this significantly increases the risk of complications. Additionally, due to relatively lower pain sensitivity in this area, patients may not immediately recognize complications during the procedure.
While certain types of fillers have been approved for use in this area, Dr. Sasathorn emphasized that they must be used appropriately and only under the care of experienced medical professionals to ensure patient safety.
