New Delhi — On Monday, January 6, India's central government health ministry reported two confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the southern state of Karnataka. The cases involve a 3-month-old female infant and an 8-month-old male infant, both without any history of international travel.

The two patients were diagnosed at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Both infants had a history of pneumonia. The female infant has been discharged from the hospital, while the male infant is currently recovering under medical supervision.

The ministry noted that HMPV infections have already been reported worldwide, including in India, with respiratory illnesses associated with the virus documented in several countries.

Following the detection of these two cases, Karnataka’s public health authorities convened an emergency meeting to assess preparedness and review measures for preventing the spread of the virus.
