Do All Cataracts Require Surgery?

Treatment depends on the stage and severity. Early-stage cataracts may be monitored if vision remains functional. Surgery is recommended when cataracts significantly interfere with daily activities such as reading, driving, or working.

Surgical Treatment Options

Cataracts can only be treated through surgery.

1. Phacoemulsification

A modern technique using high-frequency ultrasound to break up the cloudy lens, followed by implantation of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

2. Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)

A larger incision is made to remove the cloudy lens before implanting an IOL.
✔ Suitable for advanced cataracts.

Preoperative Preparation

• - Get adequate rest

• - Avoid makeup on surgery day

• - Continue regular medications unless advised otherwise

• - Arrive at the hospital 2–3 hours before surgery

• - Light meals are usually allowed before surgery

Postoperative Care

• - Avoid forceful coughing or sneezing

• - Prevent water from entering the eye initially

• - Wear UV-protective sunglasses

• - Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity
