Description

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) Service – Eye Bangkok Hospital

A Long-Term Vision Correction Option Beyond LASIK

In addition to LASIK, ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is an advanced surgical option for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It helps reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses, offering clear and stable vision for everyday life.

Unlike laser procedures that reshape the cornea, ICL corrects vision by implanting a specially designed lens inside the eye. This makes it a suitable alternative for patients who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK—such as those with thin or structurally weak corneas.

What is ICL?

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a procedure in which a thin, clear, and flexible lens is implanted behind the iris and in front of the natural crystalline lens to correct refractive errors and improve vision.

The lens material is designed to be highly biocompatible, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions and avoiding corneal surface injury. Many patients also notice improved night vision clarity, as the lens can help reduce light scatter in low-light environments.

Who is ICL suitable for?

ICL eligibility is determined through a comprehensive eye evaluation. It is often suitable for patients who:

  • - Want long-term correction for myopia/hyperopia/astigmatism

  • - Are not recommended for LASIK due to thin or weak corneas

  • - Are generally within the age range of 21–45 years (older patients require cataract screening)

  • - Have a stable prescription

  • - Have sufficient anterior chamber depth

  • - Have no specific eye conditions such as certain cataract/glaucoma issues, diabetic retinopathy, or recurrent uveitis (as assessed by the doctor)

Procedure Overview

The surgery typically takes 30–45 minutes:

  1. 1. Pupil dilation and local anesthesia (eye drops and targeted anesthetic)

  2. 2. A small incision (~3 mm) is made

  3. 3. The lens is inserted, unfolded, and positioned precisely

  4. 4. Postoperative observation for about 2 hours (usually no overnight stay)

  5. 5. Follow-up visits are scheduled starting the next day

Patients may feel mild pressure or a light touch sensation, but significant pain is not expected due to anesthesia.

ICL vs. LASIK – Key Differences

ICL

  • - Adds a corrective lens inside the eye

  • - Does not reshape the cornea

  • - Suitable for thin corneas or LASIK-limited cases

  • - The lens is designed for long-term placement and can be removed if medically necessary

LASIK

  • - Reshapes the cornea using laser technology

  • - May not be suitable for thin corneas or certain corneal conditions

  • - Some patients may experience dry eye symptoms

Preoperative Preparation

  • - Comprehensive eye examination (corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth, etc.)

  • - Stop certain medications such as aspirin or blood thinners for at least 7 days (doctor guidance required)

  • - Discontinue contact lenses and switch to glasses at least 7 days before surgery

  • - On surgery day: wash hair beforehand, trim nails, avoid makeup and false eyelashes

  • - Follow individualized pre-op instructions from your ophthalmologist

Postoperative Care

  • - Avoid contact lenses initially (about 7–10 days); use glasses and wear an eye shield at night

  • - Use prescribed medications and eye drops strictly

  • - Avoid water exposure to the eyes for about 2 weeks

  • - Avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, or impact-risk activities

  • - Do not rub or touch the eyes; maintain good hand hygiene

  • - Attend follow-ups to monitor key parameters such as intraocular pressure

After about one month, if recovery is normal, most patients can fully return to their usual routine. The implanted lens is designed for long-term vision correction.
