Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. It involves the insertion of a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Hysteroscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to investigate symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, infertility, or miscarriages. It allows the doctor to visualize the uterine cavity, looking for abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, adhesions, or congenital malformations. Therapeutic hysteroscopy can be used to treat these conditions, often in the same procedure. It may involve removing fibroids or polyps, cutting away scar tissue, or correcting uterine abnormalities. Hysteroscopy is preferred over more invasive surgeries like laparotomy because it involves less recovery time, less risk of complications, and no external incisions. It is often performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia.
