At SAFE Fertility Group, we provide egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, for women who wish to preserve their fertility and increase their chance of having a baby in the future.
Egg freezing is an advanced fertility preservation technique in which mature eggs are collected from the ovaries, frozen unfertilized, and stored for future use. When the patient is ready to become pregnant, the frozen eggs can be thawed, fertilized with sperm in the laboratory, and developed into embryos for transfer into the uterus.
This option allows women to plan their reproductive future with greater flexibility and confidence.
Egg freezing is a method used to preserve a woman’s ability to become pregnant in the future.
During the process, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and frozen before fertilization. These unfertilized eggs are then stored at extremely low temperatures until the patient decides to use them later.
Egg freezing may be suitable for women who are not ready to have children at the present time, as well as patients who need to preserve fertility before medical treatment or surgery that may affect ovarian function.
As women age, both the quantity and quality of eggs naturally decline. This decline may reduce the chance of pregnancy and increase the risk of infertility, miscarriage, and chromosomal abnormalities in embryos.
Freezing eggs at a younger age allows women to preserve eggs when they may be of better quality. This can help improve future reproductive options and provide a greater chance of having a healthy baby later in life.
Egg freezing is especially useful for women who wish to delay pregnancy for personal, professional, medical, or social reasons.
Egg freezing may be recommended for:
Women who are not ready to become pregnant at this time, especially women over 35 years old
Patients who need chemotherapy or radiation therapy that may affect the number and quality of eggs
Women with genetic conditions that may cause ovarian function to decline, such as Turner syndrome or Fragile X syndrome
Women who need ovarian surgery, such as surgery for ovarian cysts, ovarian tumors, or chocolate cysts
Women who wish to freeze eggs for donation, where permitted by law in some countries
Patients undergoing IVF treatment when sperm is not available on the day of egg retrieval
Couples undergoing IVF when the male partner cannot ejaculate, has no sperm in the semen, or has insufficient sperm for fertilization
A consultation with a fertility specialist is important to determine whether egg freezing is appropriate based on age, ovarian reserve, medical history, and future family planning goals.
In the past, egg freezing was more difficult because eggs contain a high amount of water. During traditional slow freezing, ice crystals could form inside the egg cells, potentially damaging the egg structure and making future fertilization more difficult.
Today, the preferred method is vitrification, a rapid freezing technique that helps prevent ice crystal formation.
With vitrification, eggs are frozen very quickly and stored in liquid nitrogen at approximately -196°C. This method helps preserve the eggs in a stable condition while maintaining their quality at the time they were frozen.
The doctor will schedule an appointment to evaluate ovarian function and assess whether the ovaries are ready for stimulation. This may include ultrasound examination and blood tests to check hormone levels and ovarian reserve.
The patient will receive hormone medication injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. This process usually takes approximately 8–10 days, depending on each patient’s individual response.
During the stimulation phase, the patient will visit the clinic around 2–3 times for ultrasound scans and blood tests. These results help the doctor monitor egg development and adjust medication if needed.
Once the eggs have reached the desired size and maturity, the doctor will schedule the egg retrieval procedure. The mature eggs are collected from the ovaries by a fertility specialist.
After retrieval, suitable mature eggs are frozen using vitrification technology and stored in liquid nitrogen at very low temperature for future use.
When the patient is ready to try for pregnancy, the frozen eggs can be thawed and fertilized with sperm using assisted reproductive technology such as ICSI. The resulting embryo may then be transferred into the uterus.
Before starting egg freezing, the doctor will perform a detailed assessment to plan the most suitable treatment cycle.
The preparation process may include:
๐ Medical history review
๐ Ovarian reserve testing
๐ Hormone blood tests
๐ Ultrasound examination
๐ Personalized ovarian stimulation plan
๐ Counseling about the egg freezing process and future use of frozen eggs
During ovarian stimulation, patients should follow the doctor’s instructions carefully and attend monitoring appointments as scheduled to ensure safe and effective treatment.
