Chinese authorities have intensified efforts to prevent the spread of Mpox, also known as monkeypox, within the country as the number of global cases continues to increase.
The General Administration of Customs of China has stated that travelers coming from countries and regions with Mpox cases must declare their health information to customs officials. If they have had contact with the virus or exhibit symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or rashes, customs officers will take medical measures, including collecting samples and testing for Mpox.
Additionally, vehicles, containers, goods, and other items from countries and regions with Mpox cases will be disinfected if they are contaminated or at risk of contamination.
These measures have been in effect since August 15 and will last for six months.
The National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention and the National Health Commission have urged local agencies to enhance cooperation and share information with customs and relevant authorities to promptly detect and manage Mpox cases.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the Mpox virus typically spreads through close physical contact, particularly during sexual activities, while everyday contact poses a lower risk. Li Dongzheng, an expert from Beijing You'an Hospital, advised that anyone who has had contact with the Mpox virus or exhibits symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and raised the global alert level to its highest for the second time in two years. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that all parties should be concerned due to the risk of further outbreaks in Africa and other regions.
