Ministry of Culture Invites Travelers to Explore "Khlong Hae Floating Market" in Songkhla, Southern Thailand

The Ministry of Culture is extending an invitation to travelers from Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore to experience the rich cultural heritage of the southern region at the "Khlong Hae Floating Market" in Songkhla. This market stands as the first cultural floating market in the southern region, showcasing the essence of Thai culture and heritage. 

The "Khlong Hae Floating Market" is part of a larger initiative by the Ministry of Culture to upgrade and preserve traditional markets in the country, with a focus on enhancing the cultural experience for both locals and tourists. This market is one of 10 land markets and 6 floating markets selected for this cultural revitalization effort. 

Visitors to the Khlong Hae Floating Market can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an ancient Thai-style floating market, set amidst the beauty of nature. Here, they can indulge in a variety of local delicacies, including chicken and steamed chicken wrapped in bamboo tubes, Southern rice salad, and snacks. The market also offers unique handicrafts such as krajood bags, wooden keychains, and colorful fabrics, making it an ideal place for shopping and experiencing local culture. 

The market's opening ceremony on September 22, 2023, was presided over by Mrs. Yupa Taweewattanakitboorn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture. The event featured cultural performances, including a Nora dance, and a ceremony to honor supporters of the floating market initiative. Attendees also witnessed coconut scraping and machine stabbing competitions. 

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, the government's aim is to boost income from tourism, create soft power for the country, and promote the preservation and development of arts, culture, and local wisdom. The Ministry is actively working to increase economic value through cultural capital and promote community identity, particularly in the realm of cultural tourism. 

Mr. Aekachai Lertvibunluk, Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, highlighted the province's role as the economic center of the southern region, emphasizing its significance in border trade and transportation to neighboring countries. He praised the multicultural diversity of Songkhla and its ability to adapt to various tourist attractions, making tourism a vital tool for economic growth. 

Khlong Hae Floating Market's selection as one of the markets to preserve Thai culture in the fiscal year 2023 by the Ministry of Culture reflects the government's commitment to developing and upgrading tourism in Songkhla Province, with a focus on stability and sustainability. 

Mr. Santi Hemman, Mayor of Khlong Hae City, noted the market's role in preserving the traditional way of life of the canals, which has been passed down through generations. The market's revival has brought together various stakeholders, including local government organizations and community leaders, to create a vibrant and sustainable cultural tourism destination. 

The "Khlong Hae Floating Market" is situated along the canal adjacent to Wat Khlong Hae, surrounded by the natural beauty of the region. It serves as a center for trade and exchange of agricultural products, adding charm by featuring folk costumes and natural food containers.
