Bangkok, April 2, 2025 – The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has brought pride to Thailand and the global medical community by announcing the world’s first successful in-hospital production of personalized titanium hip sockets using 3D printing technology, which have been clinically applied in real patients.

This innovation marks a significant advancement in the treatment of hip osteoarthritis—a common condition among the elderly and those who have suffered trauma. The disease often severely limits patients’ ability to lead normal lives, especially in cases where the hip socket is fractured or severely worn, making standard prosthetic implants ineffective.
At a press conference held at the Sirindhorn Conference Room, Chalermprakiat Building, Siriraj Hospital, the event was presided over by Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), and attended by senior executives from Mahidol University, as well as public and private sector partners.

This innovation is the result of a collaboration between Siriraj and Meticuly Co., Ltd., with support from the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC). Through this partnership, OSS 3O CO., LTD. was established to develop personalized 3D-printed medical devices. The project combines advanced digital surgical planning with custom-made implants, enabling greater precision and efficiency in complex surgeries.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, hip fractures are on the rise and are projected to reach 56,443 cases by 2050. Falls, especially among the elderly, are a leading cause—claiming as many as 684,000 lives globally each year. This new technology represents a major step forward in reducing disability and death among high-risk groups.
Siriraj’s success is not only a historic moment for Thailand’s medical field but also a new beacon of hope for patients worldwide seeking more effective and tailored treatment solutions.
