TAT Advances Thailand’s Healing Economy, Positioning the Country as a Global “Sanctuary of Healing”

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), through TAT Academy, has brought together leading experts and business representatives from the health, wellness and longevity sectors at the “Healing Economy: New Opportunities in Health and Wellness Tourism” seminar in Bangkok. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration across Thailand’s wellness tourism ecosystem and position the country as a “Sanctuary of Healing,” emphasizing high-value tourism, holistic well-being and sustainable economic growth.

Held on September 27, 2026, at Samyan Mitrtown Hall in Bangkok, the event provided a platform for industry leaders, entrepreneurs and specialists to exchange knowledge, explore emerging business opportunities and establish partnerships across the health, wellness and tourism sectors.

The seminar featured a keynote address by Mr. NitheeSeeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, while Attapol Wannakij, Director of TAT's Tourism Research and Development Division, presided over the opening ceremony.

The event reflects Thailand's broader ambition to transform its tourism industry by moving beyond visitor numbers toward experiences that generate greater economic, social and wellness value.

Thailand Shifts Tourism Strategy From Volume to Value

A central theme of the Healing Economy initiative is the transition from tourism driven primarily by visitor numbers to a model focused on quality, value creation and long-term sustainability.

Under the concept of “Value over Volume,” TAT is encouraging tourism businesses to develop higher-value products and experiences that deliver meaningful benefits to travelers, local communities and the wider economy.

The strategy also highlights TAT's evolving role as an Ecosystem Facilitator, connecting government agencies, private businesses, tourism operators and strategic partners to strengthen collaboration across industries.

Rather than treating tourism, healthcare, wellness and lifestyle services as separate sectors, the approach seeks to integrate their strengths into a more connected tourism ecosystem.

Through stronger partnerships, Thailand aims to transform its existing capabilities into distinctive travel experiences that respond to changing international visitor expectations.

Positioning Thailand as a Global Sanctuary of Healing

Thailand has several established strengths that support its ambition to become a leading destination for health and wellness tourism.

These include medical services, traditional Thai medicine, Thai massage, spa treatments, herbal wellness practices, healthy cuisine, natural landscapes, cultural heritage and the country's distinctive hospitality.

By combining these assets, Thailand has opportunities to develop wellness experiences that extend beyond conventional holidays.

The concept of “Sanctuary of Healing” presents Thailand as a destination where visitors can reconnect with themselves, restore physical and emotional well-being, experience local healing traditions and pursue a more balanced lifestyle.

This positioning reflects the changing expectations of international travelers, many of whom increasingly seek experiences that support relaxation, preventive health, personal well-being and quality of life.

Thailand's combination of established tourism infrastructure, cultural resources and health-related services provides a foundation for developing a broader range of wellness-focused travel offerings.

Connecting Health, Wellness and Longevity to New Business Opportunities

The Healing Economy concept recognizes the growing connections between tourism and industries focused on health, well-being and longevity.

Hotels, resorts, wellness retreats, spas, medical providers, healthy food businesses and lifestyle service operators can increasingly collaborate to create integrated visitor experiences.

For example, tourism businesses may develop offerings that combine accommodation, healthy dining, wellness activities, cultural experiences and appropriate health-related services.

These opportunities are particularly relevant as travelers become more interested in preventive health, restorative experiences and maintaining well-being throughout different stages of life.

The seminar encouraged businesses to explore how cross-industry collaboration could help Thailand create differentiated tourism products and strengthen its competitiveness in international wellness markets.

The initiative also emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable business models that benefit both tourism operators and local communities.

Four CONNECT Platforms to Strengthen Thailand's Healing Economy

The seminar was structured around four interconnected activities designed to support knowledge sharing, practical learning, networking and experiential engagement.

CONNECT WITH TRENDS & KNOWLEDGE

This platform explored emerging trends, market developments and new perspectives on the Healing Economy.

Participants gained insights into changing traveler preferences and opportunities for businesses operating across health, wellness, longevity and tourism.

CONNECT WITH REAL CASES

Entrepreneurs and industry representatives shared practical business experiences, providing examples of how wellness-related concepts can be developed into products, services and commercially viable experiences.

The sessions encouraged participants to consider how successful approaches could be adapted to their own businesses.

CONNECT WITH PEOPLE & PARTNERS

Networking activities connected business operators, specialists and potential partners from different sectors.

The objective was to encourage collaboration, identify shared opportunities and support the development of new partnerships within Thailand's wellness tourism ecosystem.

CONNECT WITH EXPERIENCE

Participants were introduced to wellness products, services and experiences presented by participating brands.

This activity provided opportunities to explore how wellness concepts can be translated into tangible visitor experiences and differentiated tourism offerings.

Together, the four platforms highlighted the importance of connecting knowledge, businesses, partnerships and experiences to support the development of Thailand's Healing Economy.

Industry Leaders Share Perspectives on the Future of Wellness Tourism

The event featured keynote presentations and discussions involving prominent representatives from tourism, business and other industries.

Speakers included Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications; Jirayut Srupsrisopa, Founder of Bitkub Capital Group Holdings; and Dr. Wit Sittivaekin of THE STANDARD WEALTH.

The discussions explored emerging Healing Economy trends, opportunities in modern health and wellness businesses, and approaches to creating additional value from Thailand's traditional knowledge and healthy cuisine.

Speakers also addressed the importance of strategic partnerships in developing tourism products and services that align with evolving market demand.

The exchange of perspectives provided participants with opportunities to examine new business models and consider how Thailand's existing strengths could be developed into higher-value tourism experiences.

Thai Culture, Traditional Wellness and Healthy Cuisine as Economic Assets

An important aspect of Thailand's Healing Economy strategy is the potential to transform local knowledge and cultural resources into distinctive wellness tourism experiences.

Traditional Thai medicine, Thai massage, herbal practices and regional culinary traditions are among the country's recognizable cultural assets.

When developed responsibly and combined with appropriate service standards, these traditions can contribute to wellness experiences that reflect Thailand's identity.

Local communities and small businesses may also benefit from opportunities to participate in wellness tourism value chains, including hospitality, food, traditional wellness services, cultural activities and locally produced goods.

This approach supports the broader objective of distributing tourism benefits beyond major destinations and encouraging sustainable economic participation.

Building a Sustainable Wellness Tourism Ecosystem

The Healing Economy initiative highlights the importance of cooperation between public agencies, private businesses, healthcare and wellness providers, local communities and tourism stakeholders.

By strengthening connections across these sectors, Thailand aims to create a more integrated and competitive wellness tourism ecosystem.

The strategy also places greater emphasis on long-term value creation, encouraging tourism businesses to consider how their products and services contribute to visitor satisfaction, community development and economic sustainability.

As international travel preferences continue to evolve, destinations that combine authentic cultural experiences with high-quality wellness offerings may find new opportunities to attract travelers seeking more meaningful journeys.

For Thailand, the challenge is to translate its diverse tourism and wellness strengths into coordinated experiences that meet international expectations while preserving local identity.

Thailand's Vision: A Destination Where Tourism Creates Lasting Value

The “Healing Economy: New Opportunities in Health and Wellness Tourism” seminar represents another step in TAT's efforts to connect Thailand's tourism industry with the growing health, wellness and longevity sectors.

By encouraging collaboration, knowledge exchange and business innovation, the initiative seeks to support Thailand's development as a Sanctuary of Healing and strengthen its position in the international wellness tourism market.

The broader vision extends beyond attracting more visitors. It focuses on creating travel experiences that generate meaningful value for tourists, businesses, local communities and the national economy.

As Thailand advances its Healing Economy strategy, the future of tourism is increasingly being defined not only by how many people visit the country, but also by the lasting value and well-being that each journey can create.
