Cataract Treatment Programs

1) Phacoemulsification (Standard Ultrasound Cataract Surgery)

• Ultrasound fragments and removes the cloudy lens
• Implantation of a foldable IOL within the native capsular bag
• 2.6–3.0 mm micro-incision; commonly no sutures required
• Benefits: Short recovery, rapid return to daily activities, and fast visual rehabilitation

2) Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)

• Femtosecond laser assists corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and lens fragmentation
• Computer-guided, patient-specific planning improves incision accuracy, IOL centration, and astigmatism correction
• Advantages: Greater precision; reduced surgical risk
• Limitations: Not suitable for eyes with corneal scars/opacity or poor dilation; higher cost than standard phaco

Intraocular Lens (IOL) Options

Post-Treatment Considerations

• Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) may occur in some patients after surgery, causing blurred vision similar to cataract.
• Treatable with YAG laser capsulotomy—a quick, typically painless outpatient procedure.

Postoperative Care Instructions

• Avoid getting water/dust in the eye; avoid trauma to the operated eye
• Use prescribed eye drops only in the operated eye
• Avoid lotions/makeup around the eye initially; wear sunglasses outdoors and avoid dusty/smoky environments
• Temporary redness/irritation may occur and usually improves progressively
• First 2 months: No heavy lifting or strenuous activity affecting the eye
• Attend all scheduled follow-ups for assessment and care adjustment
