Can FUE Treat Baldness?

For those looking for a solution, hair transplantation may be one of the most suitable options.
But can a hair transplant truly help treat baldness?
Today, hair transplantation can achieve a high success rate, particularly with the widely recognised FUE technique, or Follicular Unit Extraction.
FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles from the donor area and transplanting them into areas affected by hair loss. The procedure creates many small extraction wounds distributed across the donor area. This can produce natural-looking results and generally allows the wounds to heal more quickly than with some other techniques.
FUE may be suitable for both men and women with patchy or distributed hair loss affecting several areas of the scalp.
Can FUE Be Used to Treat Severe Baldness?
Although FUE may be suitable for many people, it may not always be the most appropriate option for severe baldness.
For example, men with Stage 7 hair loss on the Norwood Scale have reached the most advanced stage of male-pattern baldness. At this stage, hair usually remains only around the back and sides of the scalp.
Treating this degree of baldness may require as many as 6,000 hair grafts.
FUE is particularly useful for treating hair loss distributed across several areas. However, it may be less suitable for extremely advanced baldness involving a very large treatment area.
One limitation of FUE is that when a large number of follicles must be extracted, the donor area may become noticeably thinner. This can reduce the number of follicles available for future hair-transplant procedures and make additional surgery more difficult.
A very large FUE procedure may also require a longer operating time.
FUT as an Alternative for Advanced Baldness
This does not mean that severe baldness cannot be treated.
In addition to FUE, another technique known as FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, may be considered for people with extensive hair loss.
FUT may be particularly suitable when the procedure requires approximately 5,000-6,000 grafts or more.
With FUT, the surgeon removes a strip of scalp from the donor area. The strip is then divided into individual follicular units for transplantation. This technique can provide a large number of grafts in a single procedure.
For cases in which FUE cannot provide enough grafts to cover a large area of hair loss, FUT may be an effective alternative.
The most suitable technique depends on several factors, including:
๐ The degree and pattern of hair loss
๐ The size and quality of the donor area
๐ The number of grafts required
๐ Previous hair-transplant procedures
๐ Scalp condition and hair characteristics
๐ The doctor’s assessment and treatment plan
FUE can help treat many forms of baldness, but it may not be the best option for every patient, particularly those with advanced Stage 7 hair loss. In severe cases requiring a very large number of grafts, FUT or a combination of techniques may provide a more appropriate treatment approach.
